No GPS position
« on: February 12, 2012, 06:55:21 PM »
Hey all.

I have been having issues with my 798 Si internal GPS.

It is a in-dash mount and was working when I initially put it in the in-dash. The first time it worked all day and toward the end of the day the screen froze on the Navigation side and all I had to do is turn it off and back on and it worked.

The last two times out it gave me a message on the screen of "No GPS position fix" and in the status screen it says the GPS is unconnected.

I haven't tried to restore defaults.

Should I get the new software update?

Has anyone else had this issue?

Could something be blocking the antenna. Check closely and make sure your unit has clear and unobstructed line of sight to the sky. Sometimes the in dash can be blocking the antenna.
If you do not have any obstruction then the unit may be having problems.
If this is new then return to your point of purchase or if thru HB, call customer support.
As a side note, did you register your unit with HB?

It sounds like the internal GPS Receiver is or has completely failed.  Call the Humminbird Customer Resource folks at 1-800-633-1468 to see how you can get it sent in to be fixed.

Sonar...I would think that, but It was working at one point.

My unit is older so I guess I will try to return it.

I wish I had a trading partner that had a down image GPS or anything Gps sonar, but since mine isn't working right its a hard trade.

Thanks Greg too.

I'm going to try again this weekend. I don't understand why it just started doing it.

GREAT info gents.

thanks again.

Sonar/Chuck, my unit is registered.

Does that make a difference?

Registering your unit lets HB know you have it and what you have so that when you call in they have a data base for you...
As far a working and then not,  well, it is a computer so these things are subject to failures.
I would get in touch with HB cust ser and see what they have or what they can do for you...
With an internal antenna it is a mute point to do any swapping. That would only help if it were a sonar issue..
I dont think the code updates will help with this problem in GPS loss.

The “No GPS Position Fix” message is common when there is a problem with the GPS Receiver but than so is not seeing any of the GPS related menus or Views (when the GPS totally fails).  Not really many more failure modes besides those for the GPS.  The fact that yours worked and than did not means that something has changed.  If there is no blockage as Chuck suggested than the fault must be in the unit and therefore the internal GPS Receiver.  There has been no software that affects the GPS Receivers so it sounds like your 798ci Si unit needs to make a trip back to the factory to get worked on.

Will a external GPS Antenna connect to this and work?

Not work meaning fix it, but work on this kind of unit.

I have a 898 and 998 with external and was wondering if it may "jump start" it?

Yes an external GPS Receiver will work with the 798ci Si unit.
