Waypoints and Memory - Helix 10 and 1199
« on: March 18, 2020, 03:59:44 PM »
This may be an easy question to answer or there is another forum that will answer it for me but I am a bit limited on time and need some help.

I have a Helix 10 sonar/gps on the front and I have an 1199 si/di at the console.  My son gave me a ton of way points (about 800) that he has gathered from Lake of the Ozarks.  I have also added Stockton Lake brush pile way points using the file that is supplied by the Missouri Dept. of Conservation.  I tried to add Pomme De Terre lake brush piles from the MDC data and both units say that they do not have enough memory to import the Pomme De Terre data.  Both unit have double SD card slots.  I have a Navionics Premium map card in one slot and the other is open.  The units are not networked yet, but they are both acting the same when I try to import more data.

1. Is there a way to use a blank SD card in the open slot to expand the resident memory of the unit to accept lots of way points or I am limited to the resident memory of the Helix 10 and 1199?

2.  If a blank card cannot be used for additional memory, how do I go about managing lots of way points in an organized manner?

This is probably simple, but any help would be appreciated.

It is not possible to expand the waypoint capacity of the units  ...

It would be a good idea to export the current waypoints to a blank SD Card and import them into Humminbird PC  ... Humminbird PC is a free download on the HB website  ...

Humminbird PC can tell you how many waypoints you actually have  ... max for the units is 2750  ...

This would also be a good time to look for corrupt waypoints - look for weird latitude-longitude values or weird dates  ...

Thank you so much for taking the time to respond.  What you say is in line with other things I have read.  So let me ask another question.  My son is dealing with the same thing.  His suggestion to me was to get a hand full of SD cards, do my organizing, and set the cards up by lake.  So If I am going to fish Lake Pomme De Terre, I would remove whatever card was in my unit, delete all the way points and tracks resident in my unit, insert the Lake Pomme De Terre SD card, import the nav data, and do my fishing.  If I have added new way points during my fishing day, make sure I export the data to my lake specific card before I remove it to save the new way points.  Does that sound like an organized and logical approach?

Yes  ... this is a very common procedure for users that have a lot of waypoints or fish different lakes  ...

Don’t forget to export Nav data to the same SD Card imported from ... so that any new waypoints created during that fishing trip are added to the same SD Card that was imported from  ...

The common practice is :
*Start with a clean unit Nav library
*Import Nav data from SD Card or desired lake
*Fish and add new waypoints to unit memory (newly created waypoints are written to unit memory - not the SD Card)
*End of day - export Nav data to same SD Card imported from (this only adds new waypoints to SD Card imported from)  ...

Then delete Nav data getting ready for the next day or next lake  ...
