597CI HD DI recommended memory card
« on: November 03, 2011, 12:30:02 AM »
the HB FAQ's mentions 700 and up are compatible with SDHC memory cards. no mention (that i could find) on class card recommended.

what is the suggested SD card for the 597ci hd di unit? will it except an SDHC card? and is 4Gigs enough for recording tracks, way points and sonar all day?

thanks for your time

The current and some past year model 500 series units will use the SDHC memory cards.  A 4GB SDHC memory card should have enough capacity for a days worth of sonar recordings (waypoints and tracks are not saved on the memory card, rather they are saved to the unit’s internal memory).  It is recommended to use the SanDisk brand of memory cards because these have been proven to work with our products (other brands will as well).  Since you will be using the memory card to make Sonar Recordings I would also use an Extreme III model SanDisk 4GB SDHC for the faster read/write speed.

i bought a sandisk 4 gig sdhc class 4 card last weekend, wasnt sure if the class 10 would work? read that some model sonars didnt like class 10.
i was wondering why my waypoints and routes werent showing up on the old 512 meg test card.

now if the weather cooperates this weekend (stormy last weekend possible rain this weekend) i can test out recording snap shots/sonar.

thanks

I would like to know it as well. My friend has some SI model and is using class 10 with no problem. In my 597 ci hd di I had to test around 5 cards (all were micro sd in micro sd>sd adapter from mobile phones 2-4gb most likely class 2 or 4) before i found working one (it displayed "no memory card detected" once "mark "button pressed. All of them work fine in phones, mp3 players etc.

tested out the sandisk 4 gig SDHC class 4 chip and seems to work fine and saves very fast, cant imagine needing it faster but im still new and not really to familiar with how everything works.
used about 550MB for a 5-6 hours of recording sonar, saving my waypoints and tracks

Hi just quick one (OT) can you record anything else than gps location+screenshot and subtraction gps datas to the card in 597?
as i hoped it will record all images on card (not only very one displayed on screen) + record entire journey for making maps/further revision.

im by far NOT an expert, only played with it a couple times but this is how i *think* it works.  sonar recording are stored on the sd chip as you go. waypoints, routes and tracks are stored in the internal memory of the sonar.at the end of the day you can store your waypoints, routes and tracks on the sd card for review. or you could use the patch cord to transfer waypoints, tracks and routes. card just seems easyier

hmm just played with i a little on the water and downloaded all data from gps to sd. brought it home started humminbird viewer and found that sd card now contains 2 folders "snapshot" with picture of screen + gps data and "matrix" with data.hwr file which i assume is track log of journey (journeys).
oppened in humm pc will only display list of waypoints. (won't even show track on google earth it is opening it but then it says "runtime exeption" and this is it both humm pc and g earth downloaded  this week). But even if it would show it as you pasted it will not continuously record DEPTH (by meaning of both "2d" i DI) along with gps position allowing you to create some sort of depth map.
hmm funny manual is mentioning "recording" but i coudn't find it while  on water well will try next weekend ;)

I'm getting totally confused now.

I thought that i can use my 597 to record gps/sonar logs to create depth map of certain water (this was the idea for switching to gps/sonar combo from sonar only unit).
Maybe even buy dr depth after a while.
First of all i tried to use humminbird pc but it doesn't recognise any files from sd card apart from screenshots.
Friend of mine told me that if (at the end of the day) i would use "save track" command i should get a file containing depth+gps readings of
the trip (but he has some higher SI model).
In my case it only clreated *.HWR file (inside "matrix" folder) which humminbird pc doesn't recognise at all (i used gps babel to translate it to google map *.kml? AFAIR and only get couple of gps locations marked on map nothing like i expected).

Then I had a second go at it and decided to "record" track. I ended up with couple of folders grouped in "record" master folder.
Non of the files is recognised by humminbird pc...

is there any way to use this unit the way i want?

You should be seeing some *.ht files if you are saving your Tracks.  Make sure and select to Clear the Current Track before you start a Track that you want to look at and be sure to Save the Current track before shutting off the unit.  HumminbirdPC should be able to show the water depth for each of the trackpoints thus created but will have to do so from the SD memory card (when viewing from the computer’s version of the same file it cannot do so at this time).  If you are wanting to make a depth map, you will have to use a different program.

heh 1 small thing friend didn't mentioned - i need to dump gps data to sd first ! ;P
I'll do it next time on water.

At the monet i have only dat, hwr, jpg, idx and son files on my card.

Ps if i used "save track" command on friday (last thing on the water) but then i had another trip at sunday (i only used "record" function without saving tracks) will i be still able to dump fridays track?

Yes but if you did not use the Clear Current Track before starting Friday’s track it may not contain the water depth information.  You have to use both the Clear and Save commands to be sure you get the water depth info for each trackpoint.

I have been using a kingston SD card and have had problems saving recordings to it.  Its fine for snapshots.

I have a sandisk in my camera so after reading this thread tried it in the unit and it seems to work fine, so Ive ordered a 16gb sandisk sdhc card which will hopefully have room for several days information when away from home.

the sanDisk seems to work best on the HB units.
