how long should transducers last?
« on: October 02, 2016, 02:51:05 PM »
This year I noticed I had to adjust the gain to the transducer up higher than previous seasons.  Two seasons ago the temperature sensor failed and I never did anything about it.

Is there some sort of life expectancy for these side imaging transducers?

The boat is a cruiser with a transom mounted transducer which is not assessable when the boat is in the water so should I replace the transducer when it is on land for the winter?

Can you cut and splice the signal line or install a connector as it is a real pain fishing the wire up to the fly bridge.  Is there a wiring table (colour and purpose somewhere on this site?

Sorry for all the questions!

Xducers do wear out ... I've even seen reports of bad xducers right out of the package ...

Testing your head unit on another xducer or another head unit on your xducer is the best troubleshooting ...

Xducer wires can be spliced ...but it's a tedious process ... Try to save as much of the foil shielding as possible if you decide to splice ... (HB would not recommend splicing at all I'm sure ... But I've spliced many - NOTE I don't work for HB) ...

It is not recommended to splice below the water line regardless of how well the splice is sealed ... Water intrusion can short the circuits and fry the transmitters ...

List which unit and xducer and I will post the wire pinout for that specific xducer ...

Thank you for the info.  I have an electronics background so would probably spice with soldering and shrink wrap then wrap with aluminum foil.  My main concern is that the wire colours on the new transducer may not match the old one!  Good to hear you have done this before.  I don't know why the manufactures do not put a connector in about 10 feet from the transducer as it is a pain to fish wiring in a cruiser.

I believe the transducer is a XNT 9 SI 180 T TRANSOM Mount. The unit is a 798 c si.
