1199 shuting down
« on: June 25, 2014, 11:55:12 PM »
I just got the boat rigged out with my new 1199 conected by ethernet to new 1159. removed a 998 and 2 787's. I am using the same power source that I used with the 998. Problem is every time I crank the big motor the 1199 at the helm shuts down. It did not do this before with the 998. Any suggestions?

Bigger amperage battery (or a separate battery for the 1198 unit).

Better electrical connections between the power cable and the battery.  No loose or corroded connections, even on the fuse, fuse holder or battery contacts.  I prefer to solder all electrical connections.  Also check what size and type wire is used between the power cable and the battery.

Done everything you said, except the battery. Saturday had a tournament unit worked fine for the first hour. Started the big motor and the unit shut down. Tried to restart the unit only thing that happened is light on start button and arrow control button. Checked voltage 12.6 at the power plug, have a 1159 on the bow and installed my 1199 at that station same results lighted buttons black screen. This unit was just installed Wed of last week and was used Thursday and Friday . Is it back to Humminbird?

So what was the wire gauge sized used to extend the power cable for this unit?
If, after charging the battery, the unit will not power on than you will need to contact Humminbird about returning the unit.

It comes off of the power switch and it is either16 or 14 alot larger than the 20 gauge that is supply ed to the unit. Could this be a problem has Humminbird ever thought about larger wire size for power. I am going to run a dedicated wire from the battery to the unit my battery is a 220 cold cranking amp battery. Is there a surge protector out there that has built in capacitance to sustain the voltage going to the unit.  Any way the unit is on its way to Eufaula as we speak. Just have to figure out what to do. I have access to a high speed voltage event recorder that I am going to test the voltage drop with it is too fast for my digital and my analog meters all it shows is a deflection on the analog but can't read it fast enough. With the battery charged and unhooked from the charger it is reading 12.8 volts at the power plug for the 1199. What I don't understand is the 1159 on the bow doesn't flinch it is solid as a rock, and it comes off the same power . It is the same power that I used for the 998 that the 1199 replaced. A little cofused but will get it . May just buy a series 31 battery and be done.

Did ever figure out what the problem was?  My new one is doing the same thing.

Prior advice has been to swap the unit with a friend.  Not sure if that is still the protocol or not.

That is usually the best way to determine where the problem is: boat or unit.
