997 help needed! Black screen
« on: June 22, 2010, 12:10:56 PM »
I was out fishing this weekend and have an 1100 and two 997s on my boat.  The bow mount 997 was not on and had no power to the unit and the 1100 and 997 I have on my dash were running just fine.  My battery went dead and I powered up my motor to recharge.  My 1100 turned on with the push of the button and my 997 did not turn on when I pushed the power button.  The 997 seems to have a slight change in screen color (barely visible) when you press the power button almost like there is a backlight on.  Then when you take your finger off of the power button it is back to black.  Has anyone had this happen to them and what do you do?

I would disconnect it from the power.  Then hook it back up ad see if it comes back on.  The loss of power should not be an issue.

Not sure whats going on.  It may have froze on you when it lost power and hopefully disconnecting the head unit will resolve.  If not, may need to be sent in, or you could try getting it back in bootstrap mode.

I wonder if it is time to put B/U power supplies on our electronics. It appears that a total drop in source power affects units differently with some just dying and not able to recover from a sudden drop.
I have been thinking for some time about putting my radio, computer, GPS and Sonar on a bu system.  Of course that requires the B/U unit to be charged at all times. (maintenance issue)  It also requires me to make a power monitor that will shift from pri battery to b/u when the pri fails. This in turn will require some additional electronics to monitor and make a microsecond switch.

But in the long run may be worth the effort of design.

For your particular problem, let us know if you can restore with the bootstrap method or how you fix the problem.
