Post by: bill kemp on June 30, 2011, 10:12:22 PM
is there any way to test a transducer

Not unless you have some custom equipment to check it with (we build our own test equipment to test transducers).  The best you can do is to try someone else’s unit on your boat and/or your unit on someone else’s boat.  Depending on what problem you have whether this has to be another Si unit (not necessarily the same model) or any of our units (if it is a bottom reading problem).

Check the forum members list and see if anyone is near you for a test...

greg the unit was reading depth and a few minutes later it was locked up at 9 foot i turned the unit off and back on and the depth is gone the temp still works and the unit seems to work fine on everthing else (have made sure the sonar is turned on )  is it poosible to burn up a transducer by leaving the unit on for several hours and not in the water i forgot to shut down the unit on my last fishing trip and drove home almost 3 hours before i shut the unit off

Leaving the unit on and the transducer out of the water is ok.  This should not burn up the ducer...
Still dont know about the loss of reading...
Component swap out is the best for trouble shooting..

No Bill, that will not burn up a transducer.
See if you can find someone else that has a Humminbird Si unit and test yours on their boat/transducer.  It does not have to be another 798 unit.  In fact since your problem is limited to the 2D sonar - it can be any Humminbird unit that has the same connector plug (all but the 3D sonar units).
