I've read and understand HBs recommendations for a direct connection to a battery source to supply power to units to help with interference but have a question:
I have a 2005 Ranger Z20 with fuse box at cockpit that my 1197 power supply is hooked up to.
I have a fuse box underneath front deck that I'm getting ready to use as power supply for new 859 hook up.
Is this OK ?
My boat has 4 batteries and I have no room (wish I did) for another dedicated 12 volt battery that could be used for running electronics.
I'm not getting interference problems but was just wanting to know how the masses supply the best possible power for their units.

For the best possible power I would recommend running a set of twisted pair marine grade stranded copper wires (14 AWG or better yet 12 AWG) straight from the battery you are going to power them from. Install a good quality waterproof in-line fuse and a new fuse. Solder and seal all connections including the connectors going to the battery. Fewer connections mean less to fail and you know you will be able to supply the power needed by going with the larger than needed wiring.

Good to reconnect with you as you were my very 1st resource when I bought my 1197 back in 2006.
I believe that was when they 1st started gaining real popularity and Doug V was just starting to YouTube all his helpful videos. We've all come a long way since then....
I haven't needed you since if that says anything about all the posts you and Doug V have done to help us all out!! Search for your question and ye shall find....
To add: I mentioned I don't have a place for another dedicated battery source for use with just electronics. I have read threads where kayakers are using small motorcycle batteries. Will those work? I could probably find a place for something like that...
I assume you're not meaning for me to hook up to my crank battery with all the other accessories I have hooked to it like pumps, hydro jack plate and the like....
As always, I'll probably always have another question to your answer and appreciate all the time you take out of your day to day activities to answer all of us.

Personally, I would try the cranking battery to begin with. If there are problems you can always unhook the new power cable and connect it to a smaller battery. A motorcycle or even lawn mower battery would work as they can supply the needed 12 volts.
