Updated Issue
« on: April 08, 2012, 12:16:45 PM »
Hi guys, looking for some help.  I just updated both of my units, one a 1198 and the other a 997.  The 1198 updated perfect.  As for the 997 not so much.  I went to the humminbird website to download the new software for the 997.  Installed it on my sd card.  Went out to my boat, turned on the unit without the sd card in.  Went in and restored to default settings.  Turned off my unit, installed sd card, turned the unit back on.  Screen came up asking if I wanted to update software.  I hit yes, nothing happened, screen still asking me if i wanted to update, so i hit yes again.  Screen cleared and went to my normal sonar screens, no updating occurring.  So I shut the unit back off, and tried again.  Screen came back asking if I wanted to updated, clicked yes again.  nothing happened, but now the screen was frozen.  I left the screen alone without hitting any buttons, thinking maybe it was trying to load.  I left it like that for about 30mins.  Still no change.  I ended up unplugging the unit (which probably wasnt the best idea).  Plugged the unit back in, now the only thing that happens is the screen just says loading.  Loading blinks twice, then saying loading for about 30 seconds and then blinks again, and so on.  Any help would be great, I did already email humminbird and I will call them tomorrow as they are not open today.  I figured maybe someone would have some ideas but I am guessing I will be sending the unit to humminbird.  Thank you

doug, did you try to update with just the 997 by itsself? not plugged into any other stuff..I was ot sure from your post if you had tried that.

If Hb thinks you have locked up the 997 then you might be able to unlock using the bootstrap method..

Yes I updated the 997 by itself.  What is the bootstrap method?

for earlier models it is a way to unlock a unit without having to sendn in to HB...

I think this still works for the 997..

Thank you, I will see what they say tomorrow, and then give the bootstrap method a try.

Just wanted to thank sonar2000,  got my boat in the water today and the bootstrap method worked perfect.  Thank you very much.  But I do have another problem.  I have that unit on my trolling motor, and recently the depth with jump all over the place up to about 300 feet and I am only in about 10 feet of water.  I am going to search the forum to see if there are any fixes, but thank you again!

Make sure you are in switchfire clear mode in shallow water.  The unit will adjust power output for depth in clear mode, but won't in max mode.
**Looking for the one that makes it all worthwhile**

doug10,
When the water depth on your 997 unit was jumping all over was this only when the 1198 unit was also on?
Only when the trolling motor was on?
The next time this happens see of it does so only when either the 1198 or the trolling motor are on and in use.  You can also try testing your 997 unit on your 1198’s transducer to see if the same thing happens or not.

As Bob B said set to clear mode in 10 feet or less. The power is just too great for shallow depths..
Of course you might be changing this all the time.. ::)

Maybe HB should code the unit to go to clear mode when in a certain shallow depth.

Or could this problem be exaggerated when you have several units connected together.?

Yes the 1198 was on also.  I always have both units running at the same time.  I was watching to see if it was only happening when the trolling motor was on but it seemed to happen all different times, trolling motor on and off.  I need to check if it is in clear mode.  I know my 1198 is on clear mode but not sure about the 997.  I will check it out this weekend.

Doug,
There is one thing you must watch out for when updating.
The system will ask you two questions:
1)Do you want to replace the existing software.  Which you should answer Yes.
And, 2) Do you want to abort this operation.  Which you should answer No.
If you answer Yes to both questions, then the update will be aborted and
your unit will return to normal.
I've been there, done that.

Doug10,
Just try shutting the 1198 unit off to begin with and see if that helps.  If it does you can try turning it back on and turn on and up the Noise Filter menu on the 997 unit.

The SwitchFire menu has nothing to do with the transmit power of the unit.  It turns on and off a Time Variable Gain (TVG) curve used in the processing of the returned sonar signal.  Usually in less than 10 feet of water there is so much clutter on the screen when the TVG is turned off (SwitchFire menu set to Max Mode setting) that it fils up the space between the lake bottom and the surface.  Of course this will vary with water quality.
