Which freq do you use for 2D?
« on: July 14, 2011, 09:10:50 AM »
I recall when I first got my unit someone said you should use 200 & 83 freq. I recently noticed that I do not see as much detail with this setting.

What is best?

If it helps you, I fish texas lakes and scan water up to 30 feet.

Are you asking 2D or DownImaging?  These are two different displays..

200/83kHz would be the standard DualBeam type 2D sonar (the new DI units are 200/455kHz).

When you use the 200/83kHz setting you are seeing sonar returns from both beams.  Since the 83kHz beam is wider it will not give as fine of a detail as the narrower 200kHz sonar will and so the 2D sonar may not look as detailed – but it is allowing you to see sonar images from a wider area.  Do this: set the Split Sonar View to “Visible” on your unit (you can find this under the Views menu tab in the main menu system.  This will show the 2D sonar from both the 83kHz and 200kHz beams side-by-side so that you can compare them and determine which is better for your usage.  Mt rule of thumb is that if you want the best bottom detail than you need to run the 200kHz only.  If you want to cover a wider area than select the 200/83kHz setting.  Unless you are fishing very, very deep water (400+) I would not even consider running the 83kHz only menu setting.
