Poll - What size SD Card do you use?
« on: May 20, 2009, 09:13:07 AM »
Here is a little poll just to see what size SD cards everyone is using.  You can vote twice if you have multiple cards.  I know some people like myself, have 4 and 8 GB cards they use.

Inshorecatch had originally started this topic and I thought it would be better to do it as a poll to show a better result.

Thanks,

Robert

It depends on how much you want to spend.  I use a Sandisk 4 GB Extreme III cards, purchased from Amazon.  I have found this to be enough for what I do.  At the end of each day I download the card to my computer for viewing.  These files will take up a lot of room over time, so when done I move them to another harddrive for later viewing.

Also, I have a small sd card which is used just for updating my system with the latest revisions.

Depending on how you use your system, you can go up to 32 GB card (is the largest card available to date).  Everything I have read so far suggest that the Sanddisk Extreme III card is the best choice.  If you go online and punch in what you want with Best Price chance are you will find some good deals.

Robert, is it possible to add the make and model # of the cards being used?  I think that some folks have had some problems with some cards.

Is is possible to list most of the different major brands and sizes, but a poll would not be the best way to display the data.  I am working on creating a database for things like this and the wish list.  I know they already have it on the Yahoo Group, but wanted to start our own and make it a little different with some new features.

If I record all day I use about 3 GB.  4 GB and 8 GB cards are very reasonably priced today, either or both will suit you fine.  I like to have two cards to make sure at least one of them is on the boat at all times (only take one off for downloading and clearing).

Also, after the first time of leaving it on all day, I switched to stopping and restarting every 30 to 60 minutes, this way it is easier to review the information and to separate the better information for later review.

You're welcome

Don't forget to use Robert's HBSI Sonar File Converter then YellowFin to review you're recordings, it is a great program.  You will be amazed at what you missed while on the water.

On the main menu, go down to Dowload Software, in this folder. Download is misspelled.  Once the data is converted Yellow fin is easy to use.

I also use a Sandisk 4 GB Extreme III card, because that is what seems to be most often recommended. It works great and I have never filled it up in one trip. I also use the MobileMate SD+ USB adapter from Radio Shack to use the card with the computer. It's not expensive, and it's made by SanDisk as well.

keizerh,

Thanks for pointing that out.  YellowFin is from Imagnex.  The HBSI Converter, by me, is what you use to convert the Humminbird files to YellowFin format.

Did you guys vote in the poll?

I use 2GB for separate lakes that I fish.  I fish bass tournaments and have 1,000s of waypoints on a wide variety of Texas lakes.  My SI goes into a coma if I try to keep too many on it.  Everything works out far better if I separate into lake specific cards.

My card reader worked fine until I started using the Extreme cards...
what do I do now?
I have a 2009 Mac Pro laptop...
and
what is the best (button sequence) to have an 85 feet RIGHT movie fill the screen?
also, is there any way to view a movie while its being recorded?  Post button sequence...
(I have made 300 scans before this fall but my questions are due to the new card and movie thing I am trying now)

The card may need to be reformatted.  Give it a try and see what happens.  Does it read it at all?

Could also be the card reader he is using.  If it is not SDHC compatible it may not read that 8GB Extreme III SDHC card he is using.  He may need to purchase a new memory card reader.  These are usually less than $20 at most electronics retailers.

Just to be sure...Is the 798 c SI compatible with the SDHC or will it only work with SD cards?

I use a 2Gb card.  I fish tournaments and have hundreds of waypoints on some of the lakes.  If I make a card with all of them I will lock up the units.  I have a separate card for each lake I fish.  When I'm done the tournament I put the day's activities on the card and then clear the Interlink and units.  I then upload the card to Humminbird PC and save it.  When I'm ready to go back out I take the correct chip and load it on the Interlink to be shared by both units.

Hi,

My 1197 has 2 slots, one fitted with a Navionics Mediterranean West (= 2 Gb), the other a 2 Gb.

When I enter Recording mode, the recorded data is stored on the Navionics SD. So I hardly record my "adventures" since I'm afraid to overwrite my Navionics data. So, questions...
1) Is there a way to force the recorded data to the second slot.
2) What happens if the first one is full. Do I risc to overwrite my Navionics data? Does the recording swap automatically to the second slot?
3) The reason for having 2 x 2 Gb is that I don't know if the 2 slots have to be equipped with equal sized SD's

Regards, Peter.

two things.  You can write protect your nav card by sliding the little button on the card to the lock position,.    You can have different size cards in the slots.    Chuck

The Lexar looks to be a better card for recording and the SanDisk Extreme III is also a good card.  Tom's Hardware does a nice graphical comparison starting on page 9 and through page 12:

http://www.tomshardware.com/reviews/sdhc-memory-card,2143-9.html

The start of the article can be accessed from:

http://www.tomshardware.com/reviews/sdhc-memory-card,2143.html

Both Lexar Professional and SanDisk Extreme III seem to be in the $35.00-$50.00 range online (about $80.00 retail)  for an 8GB card.  Either one would be a good choice.

There are actually two versions of the Sandisk Extreme III.  There is one that also has the 133x like the Lexar Professional.  They are a little harder to find.  I usually get a pretty good deal at 17th Street Photo.

I filled up my 4 GB card the other day as I had a lot of recording data on the card.  So I tried to delete the recording files using my computer.  I'm not sure I got the right files deleted as when I put the SDHC card back in the Humminbird 898 C si unit it was showing the card still full and I'm not sure it was accepting anymore snap shots.
I'm getting a San Disk 16 GB Class 10 card next time.  I just bought one of these for my digital camera and now I want one for the Humminbird.

What I need to know now is how do I copy the snap shots from my 4 GB Sandisk Card to the new 16 GB Sandisk card?  What files to I need to copy.  I think I saved the recording files on a directory in my computer so I can put them back on the new Sandisk 16 GB card if I want to save the recordings.  But I'm much more interested in saving my waypoints and snap shots than my recordings.  I need to learn about the file structure that Hummbird Uses on the 898 C SI units.
Regards,

Moose1am

It would be easiest just copy all but the sonar recording file moose.  That way you know that you have everything that you need.  I tried this with a pair of memory cards and a 998c Si unit in my office and the Screen Snapshots showed up fine as both full screen pictures in the Snapshot and Recording View and as thumbnails when I moved the cursor over their associated waypoints in the Chart View.

For your 8Gb SDHC memory card, all you should have had to do was delete the Recording folder.

So I just have to delete the Recording FOLDER?  I'll have to take a closer look at the files on the card and figure out which one is the recording folder.  Evidently I just deleted some of the recording files and not the entire recording folder.
Hopefully if I put a 16 GB card in it I won't have it fill up so fast the next time.
I did a lot of recordings as I was learning how to use the HumViewer Application and wanted to show my tracks on Google Earth.  I got a couple of tracks onto google earth before my 4 GB card filled up.

Normally I set up a folder on the desktop of my computer marked "hold", then I cut everything on the SD card and paste everything to the "hold" folder.  This way the SD card is empty.  You can then insert your larger card into the computer and copy which files you want on to that card.

Erase everything in the Hold folder that you do not want and maintain the rest in a suitably named folder as a back up for later use.

If you check the  Best Buy flyer in the Sunday paper a lot of the the time you can get a 32GB card for the same if not lower then a smaller card. Plus you can use it for other things.

You have to export the Nav Data before it gets copied to the memory card.  Is this what you are doing?  Marking the waypoints only saves the information within the 998c Si unit – not on the memory card.

Nav Data (waypoints, routes, tracks) are saved within the unit’s memory.
Screen Snapshots and Sonar Recordings are saved to the installed memory card.

That 16GB memory card is not too big for your 998c Si unit to use.  You should be seeing a PROFILE.TXT file and MATRIX, RECORD and (if you made any screen snapshots) a SNAPSHOT folder on the memory card.  The Nav Data gets saved as a DATA.HWR file in the MATRIX folder.  Please check to see if you have any of this file structure on your memory card.

Your friend may need to update the software in his 997 unit before the SDHC type memory cards will work in his unit.

Thank you for your help,
can you please tell me in which file are my waypoints?

I have a few cards but I tend to stick with SanDisk from a good source to avoid fakes and 16 and 32 gig cards.  Currently I have Ultra at 30 MB/s transfer rate for the 32 and 20 MB/s for the 16 card.

Didn't really use them last season as I was learning the system and took some time to get everything working as it should.  This season should be a different story as I'm purchasing trolling equipment and plan on fishing if I'm not farming or working my "real" job.

Hi ,

For the 999 bird used to record 2-3 hours , save screenshoots and wayponits is it enough an SD card with 16GB memory and class 10?How much will take 1 hour of continous recording more or less /aproximate?What do you recommend?do you see any differences at lower SD class on recordings?

One of the most useful tools is the recording feature of the units ...

Stop fishing about 1 hour before dark and motor toward an area about 1/4 mile from the launch ramp ...

Turn on the recording and record the entire bank back to the launch ramp ...

Then take that recording home and study it when there's no distractions from fishing and boat control ...

I use a 64 gigabyte SanDisk Extreme Plus in my Helix 5 SI. At the end of the day take the card from the Helix and put it in a card reader which is inserted into my PC.

I open the drive containing the SanDisk card and create folders for that day for MATRIX and RECORD and rename that days files on the card and move them to the new folders. I then copy the folders to my PC so work with them. Doing it this way I have a backup copy of the files on the card plus the working copies on my PC.
