Title: Mapping
Post by: mako101 on January 20, 2013, 07:31:59 AM
Does anyone know if Humminbird has plans to do the same?

mako101,

Just some thoughts & opinions ...

That sounds somewhat similar to Navionics' offering - which will maybe / probably function on the higher horsepower HB units.

These type of "walking in the clouds" applications will become more common in the near future. When it comes to usefulness on the water a lot will depend on the user having the latest and greatest "multifunction" hardware on board to keep up with all the data from various sources.

The Insight Genesis website will be available in November and will generate maps compatible with the new Lowrance HDS Gen2 Touch multifunction displays. Support for Lowrance HDS Gen 2 and select Elite models is expected in early 2013. A one-time map purchase, standard subscription and premium subscription are priced at $19.95/download, $99.95/year and $299.95/year, respectively.

Anyone wanting true custom maps on a GPS unit might consider using a dedicated GPS and "professional - roll your own" mapping software (i.e. http://www.mapwel.net/index.htm (http://www.mapwel.net/index.htm) )

I think HB will have their hands full with getting the 360 Imaging and i-Pilot® Link™ rolled out and functioning. Both of those systems will likely keep the other companies on there toes for a while.

This is a completely different service.  Forgot to write the most important thing. Navioniсs service allows you to modify the cards only series Platinum.
Lowrance service allows the user to create your own maps with the possibilities, depending on your subscription level.
This is a different opportunity.

navionic,

To tell you the truth, I'm not seeing much more than "contour line overlays" there. (I'm also visually challenged now days so I don't always trust what I see.;-) There have been software vendors that have been giving the public the ability to build "custom maps" for GPS units using raster and vector graphics for a while now. It was a convoluted process back then, but this is from 2009. Click images to enlarge ...

Now you'd get better results with GeoTiff files downloaded from the USGS Map Server website (http://www.usgs.gov/pubprod/data.html) .

Thanks for the link. Looks like a neat place to poke around.
So much information on the net. Just have to find it.

Navionics did not even do that.
Example of custom maps for Garmin did not understand. What does this have to do with Navionics .
Humminbird is not support custom maps. Of the tracks can not draw a normal map.

I just mentioned Navionics in passing as an example of another "cloud based" "custom map data" offering.

Thank you, Darrell. I know that Garmin has opened some of its format for custom maps.
Still there is a program Sasplanet and format. JNX
And that's great! Can not be said about the Navionics card for units Humminbirt.
This caused my disappointment. Lowrance does in this direction first steps. Navionics stand still.

Mike,

There is an amazing amount of visual info at the USGS site, but you can get lost in there sometimes.

navionic,

Many businesses use proprietary formats to guard their investments and keep up their profit margins. That's understandable to a certain extent. I think Garmin "turned a blind eye" (saw, but chose not to see) the early attempts to infiltrate custom maps onto their units. It mostly applied to their older units and they were heading towards card based maps anyway.

Darrell--
This is a move in the right direction. In my region only because of the possibility of custom maps Garmin chartplotters are very popular. Accordingly Combo Humminbird unit is not due to lack of demand or a fantastic price for the map.
The problem as I see it is that Humminbird no relation to creating maps Navionics. And there are many partnerships between the firms. That is, there is agreement that the Humminbird will not disclose its format  and users will not be able to create your own maps. What actually happens for decades.(I guess)
In the U.S. and Canada, users do not have this problem. Because Humminbird made their cards Lakes at affordable prices.

The problem with these online programs that allow you to send your own data up and get a map back is the huge size of the files involved with the raw data.
It would be much better to be able to do this on your own computer, like with Dr Depth.
