Update issues?
« on: July 27, 2013, 09:07:27 AM »
I am curious as to why doing a software update appears to be a unit killer for most regardless of which update version is being downloaded or which unit is involved? Is the issue with the update or is it operator error?
I have a 898 HD SI which has the factory installed software and it works just fine. I have had the grey PC connect screen issue that all have had at some point, but its not a big deal to get around.

38 views with no replies? I started this thread because I am undecided about upgrading my software and I am trying to understand the failure issues that seem to plague this process. ::)

It's really difficult to define specifically what causes some updates to go awry...

Operator error is just one possible cause...(although probably the most common)...

There is also intermitant power during an update...corrupt .bin file...and who knows what else...

Once a user has decided that an update dcescription entails things that will benefit his/her specific unit...a disciplined procedure should be followed each and every time...

I even have a "cheat sheet" with the step by step procedure for updating with my software version SD Cards so that I'm not trying to follow the steps from memory...

I also always have a copy of my "last stable version of software" on a separate SD Card just in case the new update doesn't go as planned or if the operation of the new version doesn't want to play nice...

Thanks for your reply Rickie.
After reading through the download steps I am guessing that the biggest killer of an update is not returning the unit settings to factory defaults prior to starting?

Although it may not be "officially documented"...most everyone agrees and recommends "Restore Factory Defaults" before and after the update...(even tho the software update is supposed to do it within the update...do it anyway)...

I have updated 3different units at least 3 times per unit and never had a problem.  Geez I hope I don't put a hex on myself by posting this!!  Like others have said if your unit is working fine, and you don't need the new features, I would leave it alone.

Good point Redge. The latest update for my 898 deals with I-Pilot issues. Since I don't use this function this update will not benefit me in any way.

Remember too that most who have successful software updates, have no reason to post on this or other forums.
