Best Fishing Spots Uncovered (on SI/DI)
« on: October 26, 2010, 12:15:21 PM »
So I thought id change the mood on the forum a bit. There is a lot of info on tech support or troubleshooting (which is great and needed) - but its been a while since ive heard some excitement about someone using their HB finder to locate a hidden fish "mecca." So how about sharing some good spots located on SI/DI - or even spots you thought were good but ended up disappointing you, because your unit unveiled the truth.

I personally had dozens of spots marked for my outtings. Places that seemed to have all the ingredients I need to catch fish. Yet the spots never produced like I thought they would. And I would always chalk it up to being a bad day. When my 798 revealed that it was actually just a barren spot. Places that may be deep, but had a feature-less bottom. Or places where I could see large trees, logs, or structure close to shore. Sprouting out from the top of the water. Yet when scanned with SI, these things barely went down under the water. Not enough to attract a fish worth catching. However, the SI/DI was able to show me other spots that looked barren on top of the water, that were brimming with structure on bottom. Places I had always just driven past. Never thinking that that spot on the river would have any good structure or fishing.

The floor is open for some cool spots. I'll share a spot that I thought was always a good place to catch fish. It was deep, but underneath it was barren. Although I did notice some bait fish.ila_rendered

The explanations on the photos were intended for some friends that are not familiar with SI imaging and would have a hard time interpreting the scan.

Nice shots and good explanation, keep them coming!

One day I might use my 981 for fishing as well and it's good to know what to look for to catch some fish. Thanks for advice!

So I went out to one of my favorite fishing "areas" (in general) to do some first time scanning. I have fished all over this "area" for many years and am very familiar with it. Or so I thought. I didn't have time to scan all the places I would have liked but I did scan a few of my favorites. I learned quite a bit about my river in just a day. While I marked some spots off my list, having discovered there was nothing about them to really consider it a "good spot." I did find something particularly interesting in one of my all time favorite spots. A sunken vessel of some sort.

Knowing a little history about my river, this may not be as surprising of a find. Back in the 50s I believe, WW2 battle ships (and other naval ships) were parked all up and down the river. Usually in rows, and about 5-6 ships per row. And rows of ships stretching all the way up the river for 3-4miles. These ships were never used in the war and literally sat in place for nearly 15 years. Before they were eventually scrapped of metal and parts, or sold and moved out of the river. I dont know if this could be one of those ships or not. But I intend on doing research on the type of vessel. The botom has an interesting "ribbed" design to it. And its nearly 20ft tall laying on bottom. Here are the images:

Panfish beds:

Side note: We caught a boat load of bluegill out of this spot back in early summer. Now I know why.
