Title: Rain X for water spots?
Post by: Scrutch on May 02, 2011, 09:34:57 PM
I'm having issues with water spots on my screen.  It's frustrating to get the screen cleaned spotless and then make a few casts and fling water on the screen again.  Then you don't notice it until it dries in the hot sun.

I've read a lot of post history on this forum and there's some good ideas.  A few questions remain...

1.  What's the best screen protector to eliminate this issue?

2.  Is it a dumb idea to put Rain X on the screen to aid in repelling water spots.

I would be very careful using rainX.  The Humminbird folks recommend using Windex with Viniger.  Please understand that the screens have protective coatings on them.

If I were you, I won't try RainX on this product....

I have a ZAGG screen protector for my 778C. I found that company in post on HB forum (Can't remember which forum!)

The Quality is good... Just need to try it in a couple of week here because the lakes are frozen!!

Windex with vinegar seems to be the best solution. (no pun intended) ....
works well on our units.
The key is soft lint free cloth.....one for cleaning and one for drying.
After day on the water wash and dry your cloths so they will be clean next time...
Do not scrub with pressure ...... just simple cleaning strokes..

Zagg is pretty expensive, but works great.  There was also a company on ebay called ScreenPatronus that sold precut screen protectors for the Humminbird units.  They work great and are much less expensive.

I keep a small spray bottle with vinegar/water mixture in my boat and a microfiber cloth that's big enough to have part of it wetted with the solution and the rest of it kept dry.  I keep both of these inside a zip lock baggie in my crank bait soft sided tackle box.  I clean my screen if it gets wet.   I try not to fish in the rain these days.  If it looks like it's going to rain I'll head back home.  Call me a fair weather fishermen these days.  I use to fish in the rain a lot but never did really enjoy fishing in the cold rains.  Who in their right mind likes to actually fish in the rain.  Well unless you are catching lots of fish and it's not storming with lightening.

PS you can get these small plastic spray bottles at Walmart in the hygiene section where they sell the toothpaste and other bathroom products.
