BPS Customer Review of 898/ Confused
« on: March 29, 2010, 11:03:32 PM »
I just got this unit and it seems great didnt even hook it up yet but there is a software update for it on Hummingbirds website from version 120 to 123 but here's the kicker you need a # AS CR, SD/MMC Card Reader to download the update from Hummingbirds website and upload it to your unit and it lists for $58.99 on Hummingbirds site
This was dated 3-10, I am confused, I thought we were up to date with the software updates.

parole05,

They are continually updating the software on the unit.  You may have the latest.  Someone mentioned a note that was in the box with his unit telling about the new update, but it is not out yet.

You will need the SD card to Record or take Snapshots anyway.  You can get a SDHC card reader and 2gb SD card for under $30.  You do not have to purchase the one from Humminbird.  Any SDHC card reader will work.

Sandisk Extreme III SD cards are the best and most compatible, and Ultra II are also good, just not as fast.

Make sure the reader is SDHC compatible.

Good Luck,

Robert

As soon as you get the unit hooked up, power on and select the menu key, then select system status.  this will show you the code version  installed on the unit.  You can compare this with the available updates.  If you are down level you can upgrade.  As Robert said you will need an SD card and a card reader.
there are several cautions when updating your unit if you need to:
1) restore factory defaults (may not be necessary if you have not changed the unit settings but a good habit to get into doing
2) do not insert the card (update) until the unit has been powered on.

Yes indeed I understand rural america and the internet.  Before cable came our way I would go to a friends house and use her computer to do big files.  Try this and you might get going without a long wait for the slow internet at your house.   Chuck
