Title: operating unit when not in water
Post by: jworks on February 13, 2015, 03:19:26 PM
Can someone tell me if it hurts the transducer or the HB head unit to turn it on when sitting on the trailer at home.  I would like to get more familiar with this new 899 but its too cold to go to the lake.  I'd like to take the manual and get in the boat in my yard and see the unit as I read along.  I read on another forum somewhere that this could damage the transducer.  I don't know if they really knew what they were talking about - you can read anything.  But I'd like to know for sure, so here I am, asking.

No, you should be okay (and the unit/transducer too).  If you had another power cable you could connect your 899 to a 12 volt (at least 1 Amp) power source inside your house or man cave and practice with it there.

Greg, I like your humor.  I suppose I could take the battery out of my lawn tractor or truck and come inside and play with it but I don't have another power cable and too much trouble to unhook and rehook up the one.  I don't have a man cave.  Closest to one I have is a recliner in the corner of the living room or back here where the computer is.  Ha.  But thank you for letting me know it will not hurt the head unit or the ducer.  Now, I won't have to wonder.

you don't need to bring in a battery ...... just get something like this ..... and an extra power cord.....http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0012BL8LG/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o04_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1 (http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0012BL8LG/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o04_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1)
