Title: transducer switch V splitter.
Post by: bearpeter1 on May 09, 2010, 03:26:12 AM
heres the delima ,got the 998 with SI transducer and have decided to go with a thru hull transducer ( XFM 9 20) to use for running at speeds.
what are the pros and cons of the switch and /or the splitter cable setup.
Peter.
proberley has been asked b4 but I can't search it ( too lazy) :)

If you go with the XPTH 9 HDSI 180 T then you don't need the splitter and a 2nd transducer.

I just went with this setup, pics on a post recently.

Splitter cable is the way to go.

The downside of the switch is that you have to SWITCH it, and then you lose Side Imaging when you do.  With the Y cable, the 2d will always be pulled from the thru-hull and no need to worry about switching, and no loss of SI.

I would also add cost and ease of installation as well.  The TS2-W Transducer Switch runs like $82 while the AS-Si-DB-Y splitter cable is around $24.  Also its far easier to rig the splitter cable than it is a switch on a boat.  Also, since the switch is a mechanical device these is more of chance that it fails than the AS-Si-DB-Y cable.

this is the new position of the transducer since I decided to get a thru hull trannducer.[attachment=2]
with having buoyancy pods it will be  better having the transducer lower down the deadrise [attachment=1]

That XFM-9-20 puts a big hole in your hull when mounting it.  Sure you wouldn’t want to try an inside-the-hull XP-9-20 instead?  Is that a single layer of fiberglass in the hull less than 1-inch thick?

yes greg the area I'm going to put the XPM into is less than 1' thick. the bilge is only about the size of a big bread box,un able to get much of my big hands into there to install the other one.
