downimaging coverage area
« on: January 25, 2010, 08:23:00 PM »
I have been reading on several of the forums about downimaging and I have a question- in 455khz, is the area directly under the boat covered? I know in 800 khz there is a gap and it is not included in the downimaging. Can someone explain the differences in 455 and 800 in downimaging? Also what if you have the old 262 khz- will coverage be better with downimaging? Thanks

As far as I know it does not matter whether it is 455 or 800 Khz, both cover pretty much the same area under the boat.  From looking at the drawings it appears to me that HB has combined the 2d with the SI beams to give us the downimaging ( I am probably talking out my butt, because I don't know).  Everything I have read so far suggest the 455Khz gives a better downimaging pictures. All of this remains to be seen because a lot of the folks are coming up with some great pics with both Khz s and we are all still learning on how to maximize the DI performance.

I hope that someone will correct me where I am wrong.

George I was on the website with the downscan vs downimaging and the pictures of the guy comparing both showed the humminbird with a lousy image. He turned the sensitivity to max, and it barely showed a tree in downimaging. The conventional sonar showed a great pic of the tree.

Yes, I have seen the comparison you are talking about.  I have also viewed a number of pics on this site that have the same great detail.  We have just received the DownImaging upgrade and there is a lot to be learned.

Some of the pics posted on this site compare very well to Downscan.  I still have some work to do to get the results that others have shown.  I am confident that we will get the same detail that others have already shown.  Some folks seem to have that magic touch in getting the most out of their equipment, while some of us take a little longer, that is why sites like this are so important in helping us learn.

One thing I am very confident about is that my HB equipment will be supported by Humminbird for years to come, I do not think that the Lowrance people will enjoy the same support from them.

I expect we will all enjoy a number of improvements because of competition with Lowrance.  We can and will learn from each other.

I agree with George.  This site is the best forum I have ever experienced. Because it is a user forum and not a manufacture site the information exchanged is without monetary gain. We have a great site (thanks Martin and Robert) and a considerable knowledge base from the members.  Learning curves are greatly shortened here. and it gives us a voice back to Humminbird.  There is no such thing as a silly question.
