Reverting To Older Software - How To?
« on: June 11, 2014, 02:32:20 PM »
I just installed a new update on my 998 and I'm really sick at the results. My screen is now pixelated and has lost so much detail. I want to revert back to what was on there before but do not know how to do so. From what I understand, it's safe to go back to what was on your unit when you bought it but no further as there could have been hardware changes from time to time on newer unit.

So, how do I go back to an earlier version? Is it safe to do so?

Welcome to the Humminbird Side Imaging Forums kantucky.

You can load an older version of software into a unit and you should never try to load a version older than what the unit was originally built with.  There is a warning posted by one of the Humminbird CRC folks about loading older software:

You load older software the same way you would newer software.
The CRC folks can look up what software version your unit was manufactured with in case you do not know this.  You will need your serial number when you contact them.

1-800-633-1468 (Mondays are their busiest day)...

Customer Service...Greg calls them CRC..."customer resource center"...(I think)...

Provide the serial number on the back of the unit to the CRC at HB and they can tell you exactly what version of software was loaded into that specific unit when it was built in Eufala...

And they will also provide the .bin version for you...

Yup, sorry, CRC = Customer Resource Center.
Most folks call them Customer Service but ours do more than just service Customers.

I have a 798CI HD SI COMBO with the Version 6.740 software.  I was hoping to revert to older version to regain fish ID.  Sent serial no. to Humminbird requesting prior version and received following response:

Thank you for contacting Humminbird. We appreciate your interest in our products. The software version originally for your unit was 6 640. With that software version, you cannot view Fish ID in 83 kHz. You cannot go back further than that.

Does this mean I'll never have the fish ID functionality in 83kHz mode?

Should I run mixed 200/83 kHz and just learn to better interpret fish arches?

Hopefully it won’t be too long until they fix this with a software update.
Being able to determine what is and is not a fish is always your best option but it can take some time to come to that knowledge with any level of confidence.

I am getting better at sonar interpretation as I use the 798 and tweak adjustments (Humviewer is a great way to practice).  My wife usually fishes with me, so she can't see the screen but she loves to hear the "beep" that tells her we're on the fish.
