Topic: humminbird 798ci HD SI

I am considering purchasing a 798ci HD SI fishfinder.  I fish for bass, walleye, crappie, rockfish, etc.  Does anyone have experience with this unit and what are your comments?  I think the side imaging is a great idea if it works.

The side-imaging indeed works.
I don't have any direct experience with a 798ci.
But, I can tell you that there is a learning curve to get the
best out of any of these units.

Don't expect to hook it up and get crystal clear images the first time.

If you intend to put your transducer on your transom, you will most likely
need to move it a few times before you are happy with the results.

Any suggestions on where on transom Transducer works best??

You need a clear line of sight to the right and left if you want to use side-imaging.
Sometimes the motor is in the way and needs to be tipped up a little.
If you have an aluminum boat, then don't put close to any rivets.
Avoid anything that will cause water turbulence.

Some people are very unhappy because they lose the bottom at high speed.
Some have gone to a shoot through the hull (for glass boats) or a thru the hull
transducer.

I'm sure some people on the forum have a boat like yours.
Put up some pictures of your boat transom and let people give you some advice on
their transducer mounting experience.

I would look at any initial mounting as temporary until you've had a chance to
get on the water and test it.  Some people get lucky and everything works great
the first time.  Others scratch their heads for weeks.

I tried mounting my Transducer according to a pic of another installation on a Stratos 176 XT. Dead center at the bottom of the transom. Got a lot of interference off the hull. Tried moving it using exterior double sided tape for a test run. Got it right and anchored it down. A word of advice "tie a string or something to the transducer during the tape down experiment" in case it comes loose and your prop eats it. Can be very costly.

Also make sure your bunk boards are clear when you mount.  You can rip one off very quick if the boat loads a little weird during rough conditions.
