Unable to export navigation data on 1198C SI
« on: August 18, 2011, 11:09:45 PM »
I recently purchased two 1198C SI units and have them networked togeter using a ethernet cable.  I have waypoints saved on each unit but when I attempt to export navigation data, I get a error that the export was not sucessful.  I get this same error with both units and have tried with both networked together and running and with each unit by itself and not networked together.  I am using a 64MB SD card that has been formatted and is blank.  I also have verified that the card is not locked (write protected).  Any help to resolve this issue would be appreciated.

caddeere,

Welcome to the forum. Do you have any other cards to try?  Have you tried putting the card in the other slot?  64mb wont get you much record time, I would consider going ahead and purchasing a larger card with a higher read/write speed.

When you formatted the card, what File System was selected?  Also, see if you can copy any files over to the card from your computer and see if writes to it.

I have tried both slots in both units.  And all I have right now are about 10 waypoints on each unit, I would think that 64mb would be enough to do that.  Not sure I can tell you what file system was selected, I did not pay attention to that.  I am able to copy files to the card using my computer.  Lastly I do have larger cards, this 64mb one was one that I had lying around that was not being used in something else.  I will try a 2GB card to see if that helps.  What file system should be used to format the card?

I went and bought a new 4GB card as suggested and it was already formatted to FAT32 file system.  I am still not able to export navigation data from either of two 1198 units.  I have 9 waypoints on one and 4 waypoints on the other.  I have tried both card slots on both units with the same results.  I get a message stating the the export to the SD card had failed.  Please help.

I would say call HB as well.  Let them walk you through the troubleshooting and if they cant fix it, then you may have to send it in.

I think I ran into something similar to your issue the first time I tried to export GPS data from a new 798ci SI. It's been a while, but I believe I had to use Humminbird PC to transfer a waypoint to the SD card, load the data from the card to the 798 and then I could export the data from the 798 back to the card.

Disclaimer: I think that's the way it worked, but it's been a while since it happened.   Shallow pan <=> water evaporates quickly

Software testing can be a real challenge. The mantra use to go something like: "First case, last case, best case, worst case." This would have been a first case scenario.

Thats interesting.  Try this also.  Just create a folder on the SD card called MATRIX and see what happens.  The try the method above using HB PC.  Maybe the unit is not finding the MATRIX folder and fails.

Drifter/RGecy, No luck with creating the "matrix" folder on the card first.  But when I inserted the card in the unit I got a message "no new nav data found".  So this tells me that at least the card slot if functional.  I also have updated software on the unit so know the card slot is working.  Then I did a format on the card using HB PC.  But am getting errors in the HB PC software when saving waypoints to the card.  All the error says is "upload data error. null".  Anyone have any more ideas?

I would reinstall a previous update say ( 5.500 or what ever came with your unit) and see if it works with it.  Then do a fresh install of 5.700.

caddeere,

I installed HumminbirdPC 4.1.1 and reproduced the upload data error - null when I had the SD lock tab in the locked position ...

Try saving data to the card again from HBPC with the tab in the up position ~ if the SD lock tab on your card was in the locked position. I couldn't reproduce the export GPS data from the unit error, but I think that was related to a new unit and it being the first time using the function.

Darrell

PS ~ I noticed that HBPC uses the standard Windows Format program which still had the same settings from the last time I had formatted a drive. If you're still not getting there, you might try formatting the card again and this time click on the "Restore device default" button for another "Voodoo Computer Fix". Then try the HBPC to card, card data to unit and unit to card approach again.

How are you guys using HumminbirdPC to format the memory cards?  Can someone tell me what menus are selected to do this as I cannot find it.

Make sure that you selected the FAT32 format and not just the FAT format.

Yes, make sure that you memory cards are not locked.

If you are still getting the “null” message when using the 4.1.1 version of HumminbirdPC, than do this:
 - Make sure your version of Java is up to date.
 - Make sure your Windows version up to date as well.
 - Install the memory card into the unit first and perform an Export All Nav Data function to it.  This will place the correct file folder on the memory card (the next version of HumminbirdPC will correct this).

caddeere,

Sorry I didn't go any further with it this morning, but I was short on time.

==================================================================

Greg,

Running Windows Vista Home Basic SP2. I got to the format option in HBPC 4.1.1 by right clicking on the SD card icon ...

I went on to test with a FAT file system and a FAT32 file system ~ with the SD card unlocked and still got the null error. Things got worse from there. I got Java errors trying to open the same file I emailed you before.  I made sure I had the latest version of Java. Then uninstalled HBPC 4.1.1 and installed HBPC 3.2.2. I could open the file from there no problem Uninstalled HBPC 3.2.2 and installed HBPC 4.1.1. It still couldn't open the file. Strange as it sounds, it could open a Garmin *.gbd file, but it couldn't open the *.gpx it created when it opened the Garmin file.

I will leave HBPC 4.1.1 installed for a few days in case you have any questions.
