finally got to try it out!??????
« on: September 17, 2010, 08:13:48 PM »
the tower took a while then rigging the controls then work blah blah blah!! i took the boat for a spin and played with the 997 a bit and it looks like it will be fairly easy for a technotard like me to learn. i do have a few question comments though.it has a platinum chart in it about3 yrs or so old (southeast fl). anyway navigating through my waterways the channell markers were not located in the right place on my screen. other stuff seemed right but if i were to follow the machine only it was not accurate. my old cheapo garmin from 5 yrs ago with a cmap in it was dead you know whats as was my nav-net with a nt chart in it??????? any suggestions?

The 997 was just displaying the data that was contained on the Platinum map card.  I would check with Navionics to see if they have updated the channel markers in that area since that Platinum card was made.  Otherwise you could mark each channel marker with a skull and crossbones waypoint icon or make a Route or Track that you can follow.

GPS positions can be the same numbers but a different location depending on the data base used.
For example if one unit has selected WGS84 as the datum and the second unit has selected NADS83 then the actual location will not be the same place.

Not sure how far off they might be as this may all depend on which map datums were being used and also where you are on the face of the earth.  This should be a menu selection in the Garmin as it is in your 997 unit.  Just make sure you match the two when you input the coordinates and than you can later change your 997 to whatever map datum you want to use.

Same goes with the coordinate system used: match what the Garmin unit is using for the best possible accuracy.  Again this would be a menu item in both units.

I have seen the distance be at 1000 feet.  .........  It depends on the datums.   Chuck

Yep.
I just looked at the manual for a Garmin GPSMAP76CS and it explained it all.  The menu was under their setup area just like in our unit.

The “HPM” doesn’t ring a bell but the minutes to minutes does.  I believe they mean that the coordinate format is DD MM.mmm (where D equals Degrees and M and m equals whole and thousandths of a minute).

Which model Garmin does your buddy have?
