FNG looking for help with 998c si settings
« on: September 13, 2022, 06:32:33 PM »
Greetings all. i bought my first bass boat, 2002 Ranger 195 VS, that came with a pair of 998's. I am brand new to using this type of technology and would like some help with basic settings. I have searched for "best settings" for the 998 and found a page, but the link is gone that it referred to. I've tried other searches, so much info on here but can't seem to find "idiots guide to fish finders". I have also reviewed the user manual, and while it explains some things it is still greek to me as i've never used one before. I look at the screenshots that some have shared and i can't for the life of me get mine to look anything like what you all are showing. I'm on Lake of the Ozarks in MO. Thanks in advance for any help.

On any view displayed - press Menu one time to open an Xpress Menu - for the most common settings for the view displayed - - or - - press Menu two times to get into the Main Menu system  ...

*Restore Defaults (under the Setup tab)  ...
*Set User Mode to Advanced (under the Setup tab)  ...
*In shallow water - set Switchfire (under the Sonar tab) to Clear and select a 2d view Sensitivity setting to an acceptable amount of background clutter  ...
*In deeper water - set Switchfire (under the Sonar tab) to Max and select a 2d view Sensitivity setting to an acceptable amount of background clutter  ...
*When viewing 2d - press the Menu button one time (to open the Xpress Menu) and select a Chart speed of 8-10 to elongate fish targets  ...
*When viewing DI or SI - press the Menu button one time (to open the Xpress Menu) and select a Chart speed ”that matches the boat speed” - to show targets at the correct aspect ratio that those targets actually are  ... (note: this one is the most common setting not changed from default Chart speed 5 - that’s way too fast a Chart speed that elongates every target on the DI or SI view into a blurred mess)  ...
*When viewing SI - press the Menu button one time (to open the Xpress Menu) and select a SI Range of 2-3 times water depth  ...
*When viewing SI - press the Menu button one time (to open the Xpress Menu) and select a palette choice that works well for your eyes for the current lighting conditions - sunny days will need brighter palettes than cloudy days  ...
*When viewing SI - press the Menu button one time (to open the Xpress Menu) and select a Sensitivity setting that brightens or darkens the SI image to an acceptable level for the water depth and water conditions (this one should be the most often setting used to brighten and darken the SI image)  ...

Note: My list above always starts with Restore Defaults  ...

This is simply because regardless of how many settings you have changed and things are just not working with your settings choices - get back to step 1 with Restore Defaults and start from factory defaults again  ...

Thank you very much!! To be clear, are the frequencies set to 200/83 and 800? Do transducers go bad or deteriorate over time?

Default for the 2d Beam Frequency setting (under the Setup tab) is 200kHz  ...

Default for the Side Imaging Frequency setting (under the Setup tab) is 455kHz  ...

Transducers can become weaker or even lose piezo function over time  ...

Here is the 998 manual  ...
