Title: Onix re-boots every time I start engine .....
Post by: EZM on May 19, 2015, 12:22:02 PM
I have run multiple head units before 2 858's and a 898 through a fuse block and have never had an issue with the units loosing power and re-booting during the volt dip when restarting the main engine. The voltage runs at 13.6-14.4 (normal) and dips to about 11.2-11.5 upon start up (again normal) as far as I can tell.

I swapped out the 898 and installed the Onix 10 and wired the Onix into the same fuse block and it seems to be loosing power and re-booting every time I re-start the engine.

The battery is good, is strong enough to crank my 150 Honda, and the wiring from the battery to my master power and then to my fuse block is good (and uses a heavier gauge wire).

Is it just that the Onix is hyper sensitive to voltage drops? Has anyone else had this issue?

I want to see if there is something I can do before I'm forced to install a 12v DC UPS ( 12 volt direct current uninterrupted power supply) box just to get around this.

Your battery may be able to crank your 150, but that may be all it can do.
Just because the voltage is within specs, it doesn't mean there is adequate current flow (amps), to run your 3 sonars when the main motor is cranking.

Check the obvious first:
Fully charge your battery and have it load tested.
Places like autozone/advanceauto will do it for free.

If that is not it, then the Onix may indeed be very sensitive.
I'd get a separate battery for the 3 sonars.

I dealt with the same thing all last year while powering through my Rangers power system. I have since ran power directly to the battery , and now have no issues with the units turning off due to amps/voltage dropping off.

Just installed Dual Onix units to boat with Yamaha 150, same problem, very frustrating, had battery checked and it checked good for cranking amps, put newer larger battery in and took care of problem. Bought a new Optima Battery 8027-127-FFP D27M BlueTop Starting and Deep Cycle Marine Battery from Amazon
