Well finally was able to put the boat in the water and test the unit.
Worked good I think. The lake I was one suffered a tremendous kill since fall and I didn't graph many things but everything seemed to be running good.
I do have a couple general questions,
Is it normal to loose bottom at higher speeds with just the HD transducer?
I also get a roster tail from the transducer so maybe I installed it too low/high?
I can post a pic later if necessary.
Also, what normal settings do you guys prefer for your contrast, sensitivity etc?

Hello! I just got my 899 in the water early this month and I'm pretty happy with it so far. I've got mine mounted on a Lund Rebel XL and must have got lucky with the transducer mount. No rooster tail and the sonar image is stable at full speed (only 31 MPH, no speed demon, but good enough for me ;D). Think you will need to play with your mounting position a little bit. Think it would be best to try the easy stuff first and adjust the angle. If you're throwing a rooster tail it shows you've got some serious turbulence around the transducer at speed, which of course will effect your readings.

A roostertail from the transducer can mean that the transducer is too low. However on some boats the transducer has to mounted very low to get a reading at higher speeds.
Is this the larger HDSi transducer or the standard Compact Side Imaging (CSi) that comes with the 899ci HD Si unit? If it is the CSi transducer, then there is a roostertail plug that came with it. Make sure that it is installed. The HDSi transducer does not have such a plug.

It's the HDSI transducer, I will post a pic later today. I lose bottom as soon as I go over 7 mph. the read is just 1.6 feet from 7 to 25 mph.
I'm still getting used to the sonar as well, I have it set to auto adjust and it seems like only half the screen is used, the rest is showing bottom.

Hard to tell a whole lot about the transducer from that picture. We really need to see one from straight behind and one from the side with both at the height of the bottom of the transducer. Need to see under the hull forwards of the transducer too.

From the pictures it looks like the transducer would need to go lower but that contradicts the roostertail spray. Maybe try it a little lower and see if it improves or not. Getting transducers to work at high boat speeds can be very tedious with lots of small adjustments and quick trips on the water in between.

I'll drop it down some, could it be the cable that is messing things up? the rooster tail kind off goes sideways and hits the outboard.
I'm going on a week long trip next week and would really like this working. Should have paid for the install I guess.

I doubt the cable is doing it jvm1. It is just going to take some adjusting and testing is all to get it to read as well as it can on your boat. Aluminum boats are usually tricky.

I have seen some fabricated deflector shields mounted above the HDSI to knock the rooster tail down...
It could be made from heavier gauge aluminum flashing in a configuration that mounts between the transom and the HDSI bracket...and then creates a kinda "hood" over the HDSI...

From the reports I've heard...the home made deflector does work well...
I don't have an HDSI on the transom...so I'm just deferring to reports I've read...
(You can see my HDSI in my avatar...along with a few other xducers on da'ducer apparatus®)...

Been to your site Rickie - I ran a CSi XDCR without a roostertail plug before...LOL WOW! You could keep cool in the summer....

I have seen pics of the deflectors & they do work.... my rig is a tin Deep V so I have a big splash well and you usually don't get a lot of spray when installed properly. I was thinking if I wanted a second XDCR at the front I would fab something like your "apparatus" but two SI machines networked give me options 0' plenty.
