Topic: Battery for 1198

I had a 798 hd SI last year and upgraded to a 1198 for this year. My first time out yesterday and the battery that lasted me over 10 hours  on the 798 only ran for less than an hour on the 1198? Is there so much differance in the power draw between these units?

The battery went down to 11.8 volts and the battery alarm went off and 5 minutes later the unit did a shutdown at 57 minutes of use.

Does anyone know what the power draw for the 1198 is ?

Can someone recommend a size of battery that would last 8 hours?

The battery that I am using says on it 12v 10amp max 300 crankin assists amps

I would suspect the battery before the unit. Fully charge battery at home. If you have a multimeter set on DC volts. Put a load on battery , I rig a car head light for my electrical troubleshooting , if voltage falls rather fast it is the battery. Well maintained batteries usually last 5 years or so. The older the battery is the more likely it is the culprit.

I would test the battery as well and this has to be some sort of a load test not a simple static voltage test.

The battery is only 1 year old, but I will have it load tested.

Does anyone have any suggestions on how many amp/hours I would need to run 8plus hours and the best type battery that doesn't break the bank. The amp draw of the 1198 is 1.3 and the As HS GPS puck is at least 50 MA so call it 2amp draw in total.

Here is my own personal formula I use when trying to figure out what size battery  I want to use. Take the amp draw in this case 2 amps and divide into AH rating of battery. In your present comfiguration 10 AH divided by 2 AMP equals 5 hours of operation. Since all math formulas assume ideal operating conditions I personally double the answer. In this case I would buy a 20 AH battery for 10 hours of operation. So personally I would say a 20 AH battery is the minimum I would use. From your present battery stats I am assuming it is a starter battery. They are designed to deliver a lot of amps for a SHORT period of time. A marine battery is designed for a lower amp flow over a long period of time. They are also designed to accept repeat charges often.

A lawn tractor battery or motorcycle battery will do the job long as you observe the AH needed. For optimum performance I use a dedicated battery for my finder . Nothing else is hooked to it to eliminate any chance of interference. Hope this was of help to you.

I use a group 27 starting battery for my 1198. I've never had any issues. Ive used it for hours at a time on the lake. I charge it immediately upon returning from the lake. Never leave it in a discharged state. It is my starting battery so it gets a charge every time I run the big motor to run to another spot or when I do some faster SI scanning.

I should have mention that my ride is a Hobie Pro angler Kayak and I already have a group 31 battery on it for my ipilot so at this point I am trying to keep the weight down, the minn kota and battery already is well over 100 lbs + me 240 + gear it's startling to get a little heavy LOL

yea it may be too much for ya then  lol  the pm1 is almost 80 pounds or so
