Problem to view snapshots and recordings
« on: May 14, 2009, 03:56:18 PM »
Hi all,
I did a couple of recordings and took some snapshots and stored them on the SD card with the "Export all nav data" function of my 981.

Lately I noticed that some of the recordings can't be converted, others without a problem.
When I try to get them converted with HBSI sometimes an error message appears "one or more sonar files not found". In the file name box there are something like small rectangles and then .SON.

In other cases the error message says " incorrect file or file corrupted at position 819588". In the file name box is written: "7552-2.SON"

Today I downloaded the snapshots to my PC but cannot open them. The message display "no preview available".

Anyone run in these problems too?

Any recommendations are welcome.
Thanks in advance
Harry

Harald,

You do not have to do the "Export all Nav Data" to store the Recordings or Snapshots.  They are automaticaaly saved to the SD Card.

The Export all Nav Data will send all your Waypints, Routes, and Tracks to the SD Card so you can view them in Humminbird PC.

As for not being able to view your snapshots, have your tried opening them in an Image Viewer or are you just trying to view them with the Windows Preview?

Weren't you having a recording issue before and reinstalled your firmware right?  Not sure whats going on there?  Are you shutting off the unit before you "Stop Recording"?

Thanks for advice Robert!
I stopped recording before I shut down the unit.
I tried the Windows preview and an image viewer, both didn't work with the snapshots I had on the first SD card. I formated this card just ten minutes ago. I think there was the problem.
Unfortunately on this card were some "important" records and pictures  >:(

But I changed the card while I was out on the water, because I was afraid of running out of space. With the second SD card are no issues.

Now check this out:

I think I found the sail boat the Water Police is looking for since three years  ;)

Can you make recordings and snapshot with your 981  :o

I have a 987 Cx SI and i can only make snapshot.  Software is 4.180

Am i doing something wrong  ::)

It makes a folder on the sd card called snapshot, and 2 files for each snapshot   ex.   s00021.png file and a s00021.dat file.

Sure you can Gert!!!

1: get it in advanced User Mode,
2: Choose in the Readout Menu Snapshot View available
3: Get a second SD Card for the Recordings in you second SD Card slot (you'll propably have this anyways, right?)

Starting a Record: Press the View Button until you're in the Snapshot View, then press the Menu Button. A drop down Menu shows up. Go down to "Start recording" and use the 4 way Button to start the Recording.
If you want to stop the Recording in the Side View Mode just press the Menu Button once and use the 4 way Button to stop it. Unfortunately, one have to go back through the above described process to start again.
I helped my self by storing the Snapshot View on one of the three Preset Buttons. If I want to restart, I press this one and then Menu and can shoot right away.

Sehr gut.  Danke Harald   ;D

How big is a 30 minutes recording ?

I have 2 pcs.  8gb Kingston SDHC class 6 SD cards in the unit.  I dont use maps in the unit.

I use a 17" widescreen Toshiba notebook  and Garmin mapsource, Bluechart Atlantic ver 9.5.

I feed the notebook with a Garmin E-trex vista CX via usb.  It works great.

It will depend on your range setting, ping rate, and if you have both 2d sonar beams on.  I know there is a post somewhere that we have had this discussion.  It can vary greatly! If you are recording at a lower range, say 50' it will be substantially less than a recording at say 200'.

So a little tip here, to maximize recording size, turn off the 83khz (or 50khz if 987c with 1st gen SI transducer).  This is one less .SON file the system has to record to the SD card.

Why says the manual absolutly nothing about this feature  :o

This feature was added later on the 987c and was not in the original manual.

Here are the pages from the 997c manual. * Snapshot and Recording.pdf (364.5 kB - downloaded 388 times.)
