Looks like I got the autocharts map making down, but wondered if instead of the grid, I could overlay a topo map or google map image, over my plotted map?

yes you can on your computer, but not on your humminbird unit. To see it on your computer you need to select custom overlay in the settings menu. So far it wont transfer to your unit, hopefully that changes.

Has anyone out there, "successully", used a google map as their custom map in AC? I ask this, as I've done my best to "interpret" ACs instructions how to do this, and I cannot get it to work....bummer! The first time, I got the error message that there was no calibration file. After reading about creating one....and attempting it dozens of times, nada!!!!

Ed i don't think the Google maps will work. but the USGS and others should. there are some choices listed in the custom menu.. My guess is they need to be available to the public or public. Google are not to my knowledge.

Thanks TTF. I thought GE might work as AC say that GE, .kml files, can be used as calibration files, and "any" .jpg file can be used, as well. I understand the need to calibrate a custom image/map so it would be "in sync" with AC, but the process, as explained in AC, escaped me! Oh well.......

Thanks again.

its been a few months since i played with auto chart. but as i recall no calibration was necessary. when i chose custom overlay, it automatically overplayed the image in the mapping area i was working with.

i just loaded auto chart to see. and you need to go to Tools>Settings>Background Map and select Online maps. Then click the drop down arrow and select MapQuest open aerial map. then go through the process of creating your map. when your contours show, then right click on the map and make sure background map is selected (checked). and your background map should load. If it doesnt then  maybe MapQuest doesn't have Canada maps
