You can use the GR16 or the GR50.  The GR50 is certainly the recommended reciever for its higher accuracy and faster startup time.

Does that mean that the 798 does not have built-in GPS or that external GPS is better??

Stuart’s 798ci Si unit does have an internal GPS Receiver because it was built that way (that is what the extra “i” in the model number means).  We also build the 798c Si that does not have an internal GPS Receiver.

I think that the external is better as it can be mounted closer to the transducer (for console mounted units) which helps maintain the accuracy of the GPS coordinates when you mark some structure using the unit’s sonar.

Hi,

are you sure that a GR16 could be Used with the 798c Si ??
Because on the Humminbird Website, when we look at accessories for 798c Si, the GR50 and GR16 appears and if we look at the GR16 the compatible products that are listed does not show the 798c SI but only a "798C" ?

Thanks

Zebu,

The 798c and 798c SI are the same unit!  The GR16 is compatible with pretty much all the Humminbird GPS units.  For years, it ws the primary GPS reciever.

Thanks,

I was pretty sure that it was the same unit but I had a small doubt.

The GR16 is actually the GPS receiver I bought with my Matrix 17.

Now, I want to buy a more powerful one and I think that Side Imaging could be a good feature for scuba diving, as charts are a good feature for yachting and fishing ;)
