GPS puck location on 'toon
« on: November 03, 2012, 02:39:58 PM »
Any opinions on mounting the gps puck at the location shown in pictures below?
Other thought was to run an aluminum plate out from about where the cardboard is handing and mount the puck on the aluminum plat.

Other suggestions are welcome - hoping to get it on the water later this evening.

I think you will not be happy with this location. For the GPS antenna to receive the greatest amount of signal,
it needs to be able to "see" the horizon in a 360 degree unobstructed view. Most of the view will be blocked at this location.
I do have a suggestion though. First I need to get to my boat and Home Depot tomorrow for the parts list.

This is an option.
I have a pontoon as well.  As for the GPS mount location, I used a mast extension on the ski tow bar.  The GPS uses the threaded attachment that came in the box.  I see that your pontoon has a similar arrangement as mine.  Just mount it on the port side of the tow bar and it will be right above your transducer.  Mine works Awesome this way!!  ;D  I got this Shakespeare mast and mount. http://shakespeare-marine.com/antennas.asp?antenna=4364 and http://shakespeare-marine.com/mountshow.asp?findmount=4720.  I will be at my boat  this week and will snap a few pictures of my setup before I put my boat in storage for the winter.

After reading depark1's suggestion, I think it is WAY better than mine.
I would follow his successful installation instructions. Good luck.

I few pics would be awesome.  I picked up some pvc pipe/glue and other fittings last weekend, but couldnt find a good place to mount it.  Kids jump off back of deck and we use ski bar, your suggestion may be the way to go.

tks

"I picked up some pvc pipe/glue and other fittings last weekend,"--- You and I think alike.
Here goes. Parts list. All plastic is 3/4" schedule 40. Prices are Home Depot.
1-- 3/4" end cap.--- ( .46 )  Get flat ended. Some vendors are rounded.
  1-- 3/4" either 24" ( $1.28) or 10' ($2.18 ) piece of pipe.   24" may not be long enough, depending on location.
1-- 3/4" male adapter. ( .46 ) slips on pipe on one end/threaded on other.
Please note.  No glue. The lettering on the pipe comes off with "goof off" and a rag.
Remember that the antenna needs to "see" the horizon for 360 degrees for best signal.
The threads on the male adapter DO NOT match the threads on the antenna, BUT if you screw it on just until it tightens up, it will hold.
Pre assemble  parts ( cap, pipe- cut to length-,male adapter, and antenna ). No glue. Select your location.
  Once selected, disassemble parts.
To fasten the end cap to the deck, after checking for clearance under deck, I drilled a hole through the cap and used a wood screw with a washer to hold in place.
Re assemble the parts. Friction should hold it OK. Mine has held to 70MPH.
Because of the height of the installation, you may need to brace it near the top.
Good luck. Adjust instructions as needed.

Boat is in storage. I'll see if I can get it out over the weekend and take some photos.
Then I will need help getting the photos from the camera to the site.
Semi computer illiterate here. All I do is email and surf the web.
Not much better with a camera. I'll try.
     Hope to post Monday.

Just get the pictures onto your computer Mike and when you post: look for "Attach:" just below where you type your message when you post.  You will than have to "Browse..." tot he location on your computer where the pictures are.  Each picture will have to be attached this way but the site will allow multiple pictures for each message.

    I did what you said.
Images in computer. Browse. Attach (Inline full-size image).
When I go to Preview, I get 3 large white boxes that say Image so and so. No picture.
Image size is larger that site allows for posting, but I read that it will be re sized to fit with clickable enlarge.
Got chicken and didn't hit Post.

Mike,
I think that you will have to use a program to reduce the size of the images… you are on your own with that as I have never had to do that.

Maybe see if you can e-mail them to me, one at a time, and I will post them here for you if I can figure out how to reduce them in size…

Let's see if this works Mike...

   1-- complete unit
2-- how base is fastened to boat.   should have used stainless.   will replace in the spring.
   3-- pieces parts.

Posting this for newkid4si (Mike):

Transducer location seems to be a high volume topic on the site.
I decided to build a device that could control all three axis from in the boat.
Picture 1 - device removed from boat so you can see overall relationship of parts.
Picture 2 - attached and in raised position for transport. (bottom of slot).
Picture 3 - full down position. (ready for use- top of slot).
Picture 4 - close-up of transducer in down position.
Picture 5 - this is how I keep the transducer level with varying loads (1 to 3 people).  Ratchet is used to tighten nut after level.  Ratchet and level ride in splash-well, not where shown.

Up/Down is controlled by slot.
Port/Starboard level is controlled by gently bumping unit at top.
Bow/Stern pitch is by shim above/below bolt until proper location is determine, then permanently adjust transducer.

Looks pretty crude, but it works like a champ.

Thanks for posting the photos. This may give our members some ideas for their situation.
The relationship between the aluminum bracket and the bottom of the transducer was
   created parallel during construction.

Could you build something like that for a bigger boat and lower it further to high speed runs/cruise ?

My top speed is 20mph. I used 3/4" oak to make it. Seems to have worked good so far.
As can be seen in the fourth photo, the wood stops even with the bottom of the transom.
I went that low to get clean water flow over the transducer. I haven't tried raising it yet, but will in the spring.
There is about a bazillion rivets on that aluminum boat.
I am toying with the idea of fabricating something to put in front of the transducer to protect it from when I hit something.
Another option is raising the TD level with the bottom and see if I can get to 5/6 mph with clean water for SI,
and put an Alumaducer inside for faster 2D. Decisions, decisions.

How much lower and how much faster were you thinking?

My boat can go ~30mph and 2d at that speed with the hdsi TD only would be nice. I have my shoot thru disconnected right now because I don't think I get as good of returns with it as with using the hdsi. Currently I can do up to about 7mph and keep all readings clean.

I would think it would be worth a try. I have $10.-15. invested in the whole rig.
Only risk was one hole well above water line. Nice thing about my design is that it's adjustable.
You could make the slot longer so that it go lower in the water. If it didn't work, you could raise it up.

I don't know if going 30mph is going to be an option for that kind of setup. haha. I depend on my lake map cards but it's the lakes that aren't on the cards that I have to troll around to find the safe water.

So far, I've been satisfied with how the bracket has worked.

BTW-- Nice fish in your picture!

I was just wondering if the hdsi could maintain a 2d reading at high speeds with that kind of setup. Maybe something similar to a 360 deployment.

With the current setup, the hdsi reads 2D bottom to 20mph. That's my top speed.
Prior to this, with the hdsi mounted directly to the transom, I lost 2D bottom at about 8-9mph.
Now to be fair to the situation, with the current setup, it is MUCH easier to dial in the proper transducer location.
Left/right level is determined using the level on the aluminum bracket.
Fore/aft pitch was determined by shims temporarily placed above/below the attachment bolt.
After correct fore/aft pitch adjustment was determined, shim was removed and transducer was permanently adjusted to the correct position.
Currently the transducer is lower in the water than the original transom location. That may cause better clean water flow.
A lose of 2D at 8-9mph may have been caused by the rivets creating poor water flow at higher speed.

TroyBoy, do you see any changes to the heading when you deploy and store your trolling motor.  Test this while the boat is on the trailer so wind/current and boat movement will not be a factor.

others have already asked me to test that.  they seem to think the trolling motor will confuse the heading.  I dont care as long as my boat icon shows me pointed in the right direction.  I never have heading showing.
