1198, 1199, and ONIX 10
« on: March 09, 2014, 09:14:29 PM »
I guess I am jumping the gun here a little because the 1199 and Onix 10 aren't included in the forums yet, but I am looking for comparison info if any of you have it.

I am in the process of buying a high performance side imaging unit for use in the flats of Pine Island, Fl and the Gulf.  I went to Bass Pro and they had an Onix 10 next to an 1198 (no 1199 in stock).  Screens on both were very impressive.   Onix 10 alludes to DSP and the 1198 and 1199 do not.  To what extent side imaging is different between the 1198 and Onix 10 is what I am trying to find out.

Onix 10 has a little more screen resolution than 1198 and 1199.  The touch screen options are nice.  I have heard that the Down Imaging of the Onix 10 is improved over the 1198 and 1199.  But what about side imaging?  The transducer for the Onix 10 is different, but does that affect side imaging?  Is side imaging of the Onix 10 going to be better than the 1198/1199 or the same?  Are they doing anything differently in the Onix 10 vs 1198/1199 for side imaging or are they essentially the same?

Thanks

Welcome to the Humminbird Side Imaging Forums TDW, wish I had some better answers for you here.

The 1198 and 1199 are just about identical as far as the sonar goes.  So you can make your comparisons to the ONIX units from the 1198.

As for the ONIX – I have not been on the water with one yet but understand that the Si sonar should be close to the same as the 1198/1199 Si sonar.  The DI sonar will be different as the transducer for the ONIX has a dedicated element for the DI sonar.

This is probably the most info we have by a regular user on the ONIX to date...:

Thank you for the information.  Having gone thru the full topic is sounds like there are some issues with the new Onix unit.  Don't really want to but am going to have to wait before I buy anything.  I like the 360 concept and think it is a better solution than Lowrance's Spotlight Scan.  Prefer an automated scan vs foot and don't want to add a trolling motor.  So this option keeps me oriented towards Humminbird.  So I will wait to get additional feedback on the 1199 and Onix 10.  I hope it doesn't take too long, but $2-3K for a fishfinder needs to work 100% before I will buy it.  Thanks

The ONIX is just starting to ship.....and I think it is backordered everywhere.

I think it is going to be a terriffic unit.  Some of the problems were due to the old 5 port ethernet switch being used.

More people will be getting them installed real soon now, and the water is getting soft, so we should start seeing more info on the ONIX.
I am in the wait and see mode right now also, but I think I am going to be getting one.

I am with you, Bob B.  I also will probably get one, but I want to read the feedback before pulling the trigger.  It looks like a great unit.

Bob B- what issues with the ethernet switch?  We have one installed with our new setup and would like to know if it is same switch and if so what we need to know- had some issues so not sure if it was "newbie" learning curver or related to the switch. Thanks!

There are a lot of problems with the old ethernet switch and the ONIX.....You will want the new one.

The old one just isn't fast enough for the ONIX.

Hi TDW

I have got what you need :)  I had 998 for 3 years, I believe there is no difference of side imaging capability with 1198 or 1199! They are all working until 50 meters depth. I was disapointed when I heard there will no performance difference at new humminbird series about side imaging.

However. 2 weeks ago I had chance to use Onix 10 si. So I tested it on deep water ;)

BAMMMMM!

If you set the sensitivity to 20, and set the SI colors to Amber2, you will see it is working great until 75 meters depth! Actually it is working until 80 meters but not so good. But until 75 meters, it rocks!

Actually I saved a couple of screenshots at 75 meters but I was thinking it was saving to my sdcard, when I went home, I realised that screenshots is in onix! So I will be on sea at weekend. I will post these screenshots to forum.

By the way, Onix is performing SI on 50 meters much more better than 998 and have great details!
