XHS-9-HDSI-180-T poor function at higher speeds?
« on: May 10, 2014, 11:15:16 AM »
I have recently mounted the transducer to my new 1199 cxi HD SI, I loose contact with bottom when passing 20 knots, regardless of how I adjust the probe up and down. Last try its clearly below the bottom at the transom.

I have used both Lowrance and Humminbird before on the same boat with good results, the difference is that now the transducer is located approx 10" further out to the right away from propeller turbulence and therefore also approx 2,5" higher up and this might also have an negative impact.

I am just now mounting an additional transducer XNT 9 20, 200/83 kHz since I run the 1199 together with a 1158 cx with ethernet connection in between. This might be an option when travelling longer distance.

So my question to you guys is if I can expect good 2D readings at 200/83 kHz with the XHS-9 transducer if mounted correctly?

All help highly appreciated :)

I could not get my the SI transducer on my 999 to read depth correctly at cruising speed either.  Add the fact that this expensive SI transducer was fully exposed below the hull of the boat and I opted to add the secondary XNT 9 20 using the Y cable.  Everything now works correctly.  My SI transducer is mounted below my jackplate slightly starboard of the centerline of the boat.  It is mounted high enough that when cruising it is completely out of the water and safe from impact.  The XNT is mounted on the outside Starboard corner of the boat slightly below the hull line.  Due to the configuration of my transom  the XNT is slightly forward of the SI transducer.  The result is the SI transducer has a clear view to both sides.  If you have a flat transom you will need to mount the XNT as close to the transom as possible and probably extend the SI transducer aft so that its beam clears the XNT.

Thanks Mako9man2!

Since Humminbird doesn't mention this little detail upfront its hard to know if this is a fact or if I had bad luck when thinking of where To locate the transducer...

I sure do like the SI function, It brings a new dimension to my fishing :)

And I guess it is the same problem for Lowrance with their sledge-looking transducer for Sidescan.

If more of you guys have the same experience it would be interesting to hear how your setup looks like and plus/ minus from your point of view. ::)

Ronny,
With any transducer; you have to get it mounted in a location of air bubble free water before it can work at high boat speeds.  This is easier to do with a smaller transducer and many opt to do so for that reason and to protect the more expensive Si transducers.

Since you are mounting the transducer for the 1158cX unit, you should try and keep the two transducer as far away from each other as you can.  This will minimize the amount of Si sonar that the XNT-9-20-T transducer will block.  Adding a spacer between the HDSi transducer and the transom will get by this and if you Ethernet connect the two units you can use the 2D sonar from the 1158cX unit on the 1199cXi HD Si unit.

By the way: WOW what a shiny hull!

Thanks Humminbirg_Greg!

OK, I will keep this in mind, its a little bit tricky since a spacer also means that the transducer comes closer to the transom of the outborder but I do see your point here :)

About the shiny-shiny looking hull, its not that shiny in reality, more a coincidence when taking the photo with a I-pad...

I am impressed of the XNT transducer I have been logging for DR Depth in close to 40 knots, I even see schools av fish if they are big enough, the Lowrance transducer which had a better position didn't come close to this and when loosing contact with bottom it was hardly getting contact again.
