Upgrade Path? Interlink or Ethernet?
« on: October 01, 2012, 05:41:38 PM »
Current setup is 798C (non-HD) at the helm and 788 (non-HD) at the bow.  Next year, 1198 at the helm and 798 at the bow.  So the question is: should I also sell my  798C (non-HD) and Sell my interlink and go with a NEW 798 HD on the bow and use Ethernet instead of Interlink?  I estimate a $300 increase by selling the non-HD 798 and interlink and replacing it with a 798HD.  The 1198 upgrade is not a part of the $300, because its a sunk cost that I will spend no matter what.

So is it worth the update to a 798HD over the non-HD 798?

I've looked that the ethernet versus interlink dfferences, but not sure if there is something I'm missing, Like Software mismatches or interlink support.

Thanks in advance for your help.

Jimmy

What do you plan on sharing with the network?

I plan to share waypoints and tracks, for the most point.  One concern that I thought hearing about is software updates.  Seems I read that if I continue to update software on the 1198, and 798 non-HD updates are discontinued, that the interlink will no longer be compatible.  Any details on that?

I’m guessing that eventually there may be a software mis-match between a non-HD 798 unit and the 1198 that may not allow the InterLink to work – but this is just a guess.  I have no details on this and there has been no official announcement for this, but looking at other legacy products and you will see that this has already happened.

Ethernet is the connection type that we will be supporting going forwards.  Whether it will be worth the extra $300 to you or not depends on what data you want to be able to share, what future accessories you will add that only work with an Ethernet connection and how much value you place on being able to network your units.
