Title: 997c to 1198c upgrade issues
Post by: great pappy cat on March 19, 2013, 08:31:36 PM
Hello. I recently purchased an 1198c. I upgraded from a 997c. I had all my data from my 997 saved on my memory card. I delted all  the SI recordings from the card, All that was left was my screen shots and my trails/ way points. I had the card in my new 1198 when i 1st powered it up. It automatically loaded the data on to the unit. It indicated my 1198c does not have enough memory to hold the data from my 997. I dont get it. Does the 1198 have less memory than my old 997?

I guess it loaded what it could so I went to look at my screen shots. If I scroll fast enough I can see them but they are crossed out with a circle and red slash?
How can I get all of my screen shots from my 997 to my 1198?

Thanks for your help .. I got more questions than I know how to ask.

You have a bad waypoint somewhere. Load it up with Humminbird PC and find the bad waypoint and delete/fix and try again.

I used to see that message on my 1197 from time to time.

You must make sure you give the unit enough time to load in
all your waypoints and nav data.
Pressing something before it completely loads could corrupt
some of the data.

I would first do what LocDown said, then:
Boot up your 1198 without the Card,
Delete all NAV data.
Format NAV folders,
Then re-insert the card, and wait at least 2 minutes.
The loading NAV data message should go away on it's own.
Once it does, you should be OK.
I would also make sure you have a backup of all of your NAV
data on your PC before deleting anything.

ive had this happen to me as well from time to time.  usually its a duplicate waypoint.  check all of your waypoints and make sure theres not duplicates.

The Screen Snapshots are still there but will not be viewable on the 1198 unit because it uses a different picture file size due to the different pixel count of the 997 versus 1198 displays.

thanks for the info Greg. It is what it is. I suppose I will have to get some new screen shots.

I definitely have a corrupted way point some where. When i open all of them in Google earth it takes me out into the Atlantic ocean. I've never been there. I have a ton of way points and they badly need organized. Some are from older Lowrance units.  I have some with a duplicate name "fish" but they open fine in Google earth. Please tell me I dont hve to compare Lat. and Long. of almost 1000 way points. Is there any other way to find the corrupted way point?

I would start by changing the duplicate names.  that's where my problem lied.  I had to mark some with a number.  Like walleye1, walleye2, etc...

I would also suggest that you keep waypoints on
separate SD cards.  One SD card for each water you fish.
1,000 waypoints is going to tax your system, and most
likely will slow things down.
I know the units are advertised to hold over 2,000 waypoints,
but my 1197 speeded up when I started only loading in what
I needed for a particular fishing trip.

I know it's a pain to do, but trust me,
you will be happier in the long run, with
a more responsive unit.

Thanks guys i will take that in to consideration.

I am in bad need of some way point management soft ware. Hummingbird PC is not cutting it. The Reef Master soft ware looks perfect. It is also looks very expensive. I couldn't find anything about it. Has any one tried it? Is it worth it? Allot of my way points are used for mapping rather than locations. I would zig zag the main break line and hit a way point when I went up on  and fell of the ledge. It looks like with reef master I could eliminate all of these and draw a line in place of them. If it comes Recommended i think I will try the Reef Master.

A few other questions about my new unit?. I used to have this cool personalized intro when I powered on my 997. I don't see it when I power on my 1198. Will it still work in my 1198?

Witch SI recording viewer do you guys recommend? Which one is most popular? I need a way to trim the end off of many SI recordings. I always forget to stop recording when I anchor up. I have gigs of useless data. I haven't figured out how to do that with hum viewer or yellow fin yet

GPC,
You can quickly look for the duplicate waypoints by dumpling the Lat/Lon into an Excel spreadsheet and using some easy formulas to show the duplicate ones.  I can do this for you if you would like.  Just e-mail me the *.gpx file and I’ll try and get it done during lunch tomorrow.

Yes you can personalize the opening screen on your unit if you want to.  Do a search for Personalized Text on the web site or send me a direct e-mail and I will send back instructions on how to do so.
