Could be a defective transducer.
Is this 997 a new out of the box or a used unit?
Where did you get it?.
The 997 is a legacy product meaning it may have very limited support.
What is the code level installed in the unit?
You can search this forum for additional information of black screens for a particular SI side and other related search arguments.

It could be the transducer, or it could be the connection.... Read this forum for some tips   http://forums.sideimagingsoft.com/index.php?topic=4086.msg25772;topicseen#new

If you know of someone else that is running a Humminbird Side Imaging unit (any model will do) you can test your 997 unit on their transducer to see if the right Si sonar works or not.  You can also check the map on this web site to see if some living near you is a member and would be willing to test your unit.  Otherwise you can make a guess that it is the transducer and buy another one to try or you can send your unit into Humminbird to be serviced.
