Title: 899ci hd si or 998c hd si
Post by: jjbch on February 08, 2014, 03:24:38 PM
Is it better to go up to the 998 for a few hundred bucks, or is there an advantage in technology in the 899?

The 899ci HD SI Combo is being "unofficially" labeled as an upgraded 798 but with a bigger screen...

The 899 has...:

*Faster processor...
*Internal GPS antenna
*Comes stock with the "Compact SI" xducer (455kHz SI)...but can be upgraded to the XHS 9 HDSI 180 T xducer (455kHz/800kHz SI)...
*Requires an AS EC QDE Ethernet adapter cable IF the unit is to be networked...

The 998c HD SI Combo has...:

*External GPS antenna
*Comes stock with the XHS 9 HDSI 180 T xducer (455kHz/800kHz SI)

Thanks.  It seems that by the time you upgrade the transducer, you can get in the 998 real close to the cost of the 899.  I think I would rather have that extra inch for the difference.  Thanks again for the information.  Been looking for weeks trying to make a final choice.  I have a 798 hd si that I will move to the front.

If I were you the order of want from most to least would be 998, 898, 899. Because the 898 has external GPS and the HDSI transducer with it.

Thanks.  I pulled the trigger on the 998c hd si.  Now the only thing I need to figure out is by moving my 798hd si to the bow, how this ethernet thing all works.  I had the 798 on the console with the si transducer on the transom and a splitter cable to a glassed in puck transducer.  I will remove the compact transducer from the transom and replace with the hd transducer that comes with the 998.  Then, what will etherneting the 2 units accomplish for me? Also, I assume the the puck transducer will work with the 998 as it did with my 7 series.

By using the Ethernet between the 998 and 798, you will be able to utilize both of the transom transducers on the 998 and 798 as well as share way points.

If you mount a TM transducer, you will also be able to share it with both graphs.

I was faced with same decision but went opposite way. I decided the 899 was the way to go. Since I will be networking it with the 1198 the transducer will not be a problem as well as the GPS. As I understand it all I have to do is select the 1198 transducer for the 899 C to use. Both will be sharing a 360 View on the network also. I was so tempted to go with the 998 HD it wasn't funny but feel the network situation made the 899 a better choice for me

All I need now is the I-Link trolling motor but bank account in critical condition ward .

I understand the bank account thing.  Gotta pay if you want to play.  Thanks for the response.  No big hurry, I don't think the ice will be off in the Northeast until July!
Anxious to get things mounted and set up.  Something to do on the many snowy days.
