Recording and screenshots
« on: April 19, 2009, 09:48:35 PM »
Howdy!
Hoping someone can clear something up for me.  I have seen some of the software to view SI images I collect as a "movie" similar to the sonar viewer software Lowrance has.  I also see that one can take these SI images and geo reference them.  I bought my 1197 last year but did not do any recording.  I am a bit confused with something.

I can take a "screenshot" a single photo of what my screen is displaying correct?
Can I, or how do I record as in a movie, everything I see on the screen?  I seem to recall seeing a post somewhere else where I was led to believe that I had to hit the screenshot button for every file saved, is this correct? I am hoping not.

What I would love to do eventually, is to create a "mosaic" of the bottom of a lake using the SI images.

Is the GPS data attached to the photo's as I create them?

Ice still is covering the lake I would like to play on, a few more weeks when the fishing season opens I would like to start making some recordings.  Part of the lake was an iron mine 40 years ago, rolling across the edge of the mine pit is quite dramatic on the SI as I go from 20fow to 300 like right now!  Sorta wondering if there's some equipment down there still.

Anyway, if anyone can explain how to do screenshots or "movies" not sure what the correct terminology is here, as I am not sure what I am creating.

Thanks!!

wallgeye,

You will be able to Record by going to the Snapshot and Recording View, then press Menu>Start Recording.

If you cannot see the Snapshot and Recording View, you will need to enable it by pressing the Menu Button twice and then going to the View Menu Tab.  Then scroll down and find the Snapshot and Recording View and make sure its enabled.

Once recording starts, you can switch views just like normal.  When you are ready to Stop Recording, just press the Menu Button>Stop Recording.

The recording files can be converted and played back in YellowFin, Deep View or SI View.

As for creating a Mosaic, there are several softwares available, but are quite expensive.  SonarWiz.Map $6000 and DeepView $1000.

Good Luck,

Robert

Thanks for the reply,

As I said, I saw a post on yahoo's SI group site or someplace where a mosaic was made, I thought that was pretty cool.  I had no idea the software was so expensive.  So, that means the recordings and or screenshots do have a location tag on them.  That could still be useful.

And just to be clear, when I am recording I am making continuous recordings of "screenshots" that can be converted and views in software such as yellowfin.  Please forgive me, until buying my 1197 I was a Lowrance guy, a screenshot was a single .jpg of what was on the screen when I triggered the snapshot.  A recording was a continuous recording of what the sonar was showing that I could replay or view later on PC with the sonar view software.  The recording is what I want to do.  I will be getting the boat out on the water soon and will play around with it.  I am working on a cheat sheet of functions that I am most interested in that I could refer to so I can quickly make adjustments.  I am still learning the keys and menus on the 1197.

Thanks again!

The screenshot and recording is the same on the Humminbird as it is on the Lowrance pretty much.  Just with the Humminbird, you have the addition of the SI.  Humminbird did not have a way to playback the recordings on the PC, so thats when we came up with the idea to convert the recording to play back on the YellowFin and other viewers.

Good Luck,

Yes, you will need an SD Memory Card.  I recommend at least a 4GB and preferably the Extreme III by San Disk.  The have faster read/write speeds and are very reliable.

Here is a link to a good deal I found on the net, and has a rebate for 1 or more cards.

Currently you can go up to 32GB SDHC card which is the largest made today, in my opinion it is way too big to be useful. I have two 4gb cards always keeping one of them on the boat.   You may want to start with a Sandisk Extreme III 4 GB or 8 GB.  Also, consider stopping and restarting the recordings appx. every 30 minutes.

In order to have the GPS data show up on individual screenshots, make sure that one of the screen data boxes has that displayed.
Another free viewer is HumViewer, and it does not need any conversion. I think it's all metric, though.
