Humminbird 898c si losing power when hitting a wave
« on: June 07, 2012, 02:52:49 PM »
I am having an issue where when I hit a large wave that gives the boat a good jolt - the unit powers off. I have to then power it back up.

The guys checked the power cable and said the voltage is good. I am wondering does anyone else have this problem? I extended my warranty out another year so I have more time to deal with this - I just hate to have to have to pull it out of the dash and send it in. I'm wondering if it is a loose connection. Any suggestions?

It is most likely an intermittant loose connection,
if the unit works well most of the time.

You can try bending your power cord connections out a little
for better contact (don't bend both at the same time or you will blow a fuse).

Check your connections and fuse at the battery also.

I think I am going to try the bend trick this weekend. I have been reading about that on a few other forums.

I didn't install the unit. What tools do I need?

Needle nose pliers....

I would recommend removing the fuse first so you don't accidenty touch the positive and negative pins at the same time with the pliers ... This would blow the fuse as Itgeek said...

depending on how the sonar is wired, just start moving power wires to see where the bad connection is. Could be a loose battery connection, loose fuse panel/box connection, or bad ground somewhere. Is it only the FF doing this or are there other devices powering off? Are the connections on the back of the unit nice and tight? That's about all I can suggest to try with the boat off the water.

I have the same problem with my 998. It only does this sometimes though. I've looked around and haven't found anything loose
Ranger Boats, Strike King, Berkley, St. Croix, Quantum, Omega, Wired2Fish.

A lot of places to look but I would bet it is the pins in the HB connector..

FYI I was able to bend the pins with a piece of plastic I had on the boat. Just something to slightly move them away from each other. Been out many times since and the nav has not once cut off so that was the fix. Much appreciated everyone. I guess now it just makes a better connection.
