Help Downloading Waypoints From Laptop to SD Card
« on: September 15, 2014, 08:22:39 PM »

I know this has been asked before but could not find it by using search.
A friend allowed me to download his waypoints he has on a SD card which I did by copying directly into an empty folder in my Dell laptop.  The files are in a "GPX" format.
Now I need to somehow downlod the "GPX" files from the laptop to my blank SD card so I can place into my Onix 8 to view the waypoints.
Did that make sense?  Did that sound right?  If so, will you help a rookie by explaining how to download the "GPX" files to a SD card.
Realize I am many years behing but had to save up to get my FF equipment, but hope to catch up with you guys one day.  Very impressive bunch of fishing persons on this board.
Thanks for your help for a rookie.

The easiest way may be to save the waypoints you have on your ONIX unit right now to the SD card.  Take that SD card and open it in your laptop and then copy the GPS file you got from your friend in place of the GPX file from your unit.  Reinstall the SD card into your ONIX unit and copy the waypoints over.  I have not tried this myself but it should work.

OH OH no idea how to do some of those steps you mentioned.
I do have a fishing partner that is far more computer literate so will ask him to decode.  Right now no waypoints on the Onix, but what I need is to figure out how to open the GPX files on the lap top and place them on a blank SD card (and to place on humminbird PC if possible) so I can see the waypoints when the SD card is placed in the Onix.
Hope I am explaining that correctly.  Right now I feel like a knucklehead, I've got a lap top with a folder full of great waypoints, now I need to get those files on a SD card so I can place them into the Onix and chase down some Crappie :-)
Appreciate the reply and I know the answer to the puzzle is in your note, I now need to follow through with your recommendation.
Thanks for your knowledge and support.

hunter,
Moving the GPX file is a easy as dragging and dropping it into the SD card.  You do not open the GPX file, just copy it to the SD card.
Here are some better instructions but they also include some additional instructions at the beginning, so scroll about halfway down the page.  Read it thourgh once or twice and you will see where you need to pick up.

Hey that sounds like the process I used to copy the files to the empty folder in the laptop.  I think I can do this, for some reason I was under the impression the GPX files needed to be converted to a different format before moving to the SD card.
Again, thanks big time, you guys are great here.

HB Greg:

You be Da Man!!!  Copied the GPX files to both the SD card and into HB PC, now I can follow your you-tube instructions on manipulating the waypoint data.
I can't thank you enough.  I've gone from dino to the bronze age, a great advancement :-)

Just glad I could point you towards some better directions there bronze-age hunter!   :D
Let us know when you have these in your ONIX unit, maybe post a screen snapshot or two of them?  We like pics!
