998c SI Transducer question
« on: September 07, 2010, 10:43:58 PM »
Hi.

I have the Transom mounted transducer that came with the 998.  I bought the thru hull for the 998.  Can I mount both of them and use them both at the same time?

Yes!  How do you plan to use them?

I am not sure I understand how I would use them.  I am hoping using the 2 of them I would get a much clearer return.  I have my boat berthed in the San Joaquin Delta in California.  I water is loaded with a bunch of debris weeds, etc...

Any suggestions how I should mount them?  I have a 28' Fiberform cabin cruiser, 10' beam.  Do I need anything else that was not included, to use them both?

Thanks.

Also, I want to put a station on my flying bridge.  I know I need the mount...  But what cables would I need.  I bought the thru hull speed and temp.  I have the transom transducer, and the thru hull transducer.  Of oc course the GPS.

Thanks.

Is the boat an Inboard or I/O?  Transom mount may not work well with Inboard due to prop turbulence.  If you have a keel, you would need to mount the thru hull transducers on each side of the keel for best results.  You would also need the AS SILR Y Cable.

You can trade in the transom mount transducer thru Humminbird exchange program if you have not opened the package yet and get another thru hull.  This is highly recommended for Deep V or hulls with keels.  The V or keel will block some of the SI signal and Humminbird came out with the Y cable to help with this.

If you have any picts of your boat, specifically the transom area, it would help us to see where you will be installing it.

As for the flybridge, do you plan on just unplugging the 998 and moving it up there when you use the flybridge or do you want a permanent solution as in adding another unit?

Ok, I have an I/O.  I have 2 engines and outdrives.  I would like to post some pics, but I haven't had the boat out of the water yet.  Here is a link to a boat almost identical to mine.

http://www.readmanual.com/classified/boats/800028ftFiberformExecutive2800.1282369965.htm

With the exception that I have a larger deck area and a little smaller cabin.

The old fishfinder an Interphase had a thru hull sensor, about mid length of the boat Starboard of the keel.  But I think its a puck now that I think about it.

I would just like to move the unit back and forth, but have everything still to be able to be used up top that I can inside.

Thanks

I did the transducer exchange, and am getting the second thru hull.  Thanks for the suggestion.

Now what else would I need for the second station on my flying bridge?

Thanks

You could get by without buying a second unit mount if you use a RAM type mount.

You will need:
540165-2 Connector Collector for 900 series units.
PC-11 Power Cable

Beyond that you can use a US2-W Unit Switch to change the transducer connections between units.  You may or may not need an EC-W10 (or EC-W30) to reach from the US2-W switch to the fly bridge.  The US2-W has a 2 foot cable to connect to the transducer (the AS-Si-LR-Y cable in your case), a 5 foot cable to connect to one unit and a 20 foot cable to connect to the second unit (or vice-versa).  The EC-W10 is a 10 foot extension cable.

To connect the GPS to both locations you could go with an AS-SysLink cable that allows the GPS Receiver to be used by two units or two locations.

What would I need to connect the speed/temp (TS WFM) to the second station?

Hmmm.....

Something that is angering.  I paid for next day air on Thursday morning, to receive the thru hull transducer on Friday.  I make arrangements to have my boat taken out of the water today.  Being on the west coast, Humminbird is of course closed when I get home and figure out its not arriving today.  So I check the order number they gave me and it is wrong.  I called FedEx and UPS, neither have information of any shipment to me.

So now I am left hanging.  I paid $30.00 for next day air.

Give the Customer Service folks a call (1-800-633-1468) Monday morning to check on the transducer.

I do not know of a way to share the Temp/Speed between stations.  You would have to build a custom switch for this as we do not make one.
