ALL SI Models - Configurable combo views not pre-defined
« on: August 05, 2012, 09:16:06 AM »
Model:
ALL SI Models
Suggested Upgrade:
Configurable combo views not pre-defined
Explanation:
Ability to configure the combo views, not just have a choice of pre-defined. For example, no chart view with DI. And no ability to have 4 way split screen.

As a programmer myself, I think to do this would be
an absolute programmers nightmare.  It's a nice thought, but
I don't ever see this happening.

So why can they do it with a Garmin GPS & Android phones?
Are they proprietary language or Linux like Humminbird? I don't know.

I don't know either.
But, judging by the updates and new features that
I've seen come from Humminbird:

I think this would be stretching it extremely.

Not only would you have to know what the user wants,
on a screen, but in what order also.
There could an endless number of different configurations.

Think about this.  How would they test it?
Their testing with their current set-ups is sometimes
very poor.

I'm sure each pre-defined screen took their programmers
some work to develop.

I may be wrong, but I don't think they will EVER offer
anything like this.

Well, since it's open source code we need some programmers out there to get the code & figure it out. Somewhere I saw they will send you the code.
As n_texas_basser suggested, a 4 segment screen & the user selects what they want or joins a couple segments together for 3 views.
Since I'm a gadget geek that just seems the way gadgets roll now.

I gave up programming (drove me nuts) so I just fix now.  :-\

I can't believe that the Humminbird quality control
folks would let any outsiders do any programming for them.

It sounds like a perfect recepi for a virus.

HB is adding new screens all the time.....they have recently added NMEA guage screens,  screens for the 360 and new screens for the I-pilot link are on the way.

I think they could do this easily ..... the trick is getting it on top of their TO DO list.

You would think being teamed with Lake Master they would have the option of charts with any of the image screens.

Bob,
I can guarantee you that they cannot do this easily.
Yes, they are adding more pre-defined screens.

We're talking about user selected combination
views, with multiple views per screen in any order
the user wants.  Extremely complicated stuff for a
fish finder.

You can guarantee Bob that they can not do this easily but you do not know what platform it's running on?
I'm confused  ::)

It doesn't matter what platform it's running under.
It will be still be extremely complicated to program it.

I predict in our lifetime, Humminbird will never offer
this.

Hey ScottMN, if you are so adamant about this, then
why don't you contact Humminbird directly and talk
with one of their software engineers and suggest this.
I'd be very interested in what they would have to say.

So, you wouldn't tell me. :)
That's funny.  I don't know why you wouldn't tell
everybody.  This site is here to share information.

I think the Humminbird engineers would laugh at this
suggestion.

Remember, this isn't a super computer we're
talking about it, it's a freaking fish finder.

Here is a direction that Humminbird could go, if someone
really pushed for it:

How about Humminbird coming up with an interface and software that
would allow users to plug Humminbird's transducers and gps modules
into their laptop computers.
So, the main unit and screen would be the user's laptop.
That way, we wouldn't be hindred by the lack of memory and speed
of the Humminbird main units.
Maybe Humminbird could supply code that user's could customize and get any
combination of screens they wish.
Of couse a laptop is not the best thing around a harsh marine environment,
but this could be neat.  Interphase (forward looking sonar) does this already.
It would be a whole new direction for Humminbird to go in.

Nobody thought HB would introduce a side imaging system, a 360 imaging system, or that they could or would link to a trolling motor .....but they are doing it.
If HB decides this would give them a competitive advantage in the market that would overcome the development cost.... they would do it.
If it goes on enough wish lists it will get their attention just like the I-pilot link.

I think we hi-jacked this thread.....N_Texas_Basser was just trying to get this on the wishlist.

Exactly! If Lowrance can do this why can't Humminbird?  Are the programmers at Lowrance that much better than those at Humminbird?  Just wondering.

I too wish to have program user controlled view or screens.  It should not be that darn hard to do.

Heck if they can do the 360 screen on a square screen then they should be able to give us a vaiable screen that the user determines what view are combined and in what order they are shown.  It's not impossible. And these new Fish Finders or depth Finders have a lot better CPU and more memory than ever before. They are little mini computers if you ask me.

Seems this was not an insurmountably programing issue.

When I saw this I just wonder how long before Lowrance partners with a trolling motor and map source. If they do I think I may switch back again. If windows on other devices are so easy to configure why can't Humminbird?

Actually a lot of these options are quite possible with these new units.

Remember they can be networked..... Add the drivers to HBPC, configure the screen display in HBPC..... Hook laptop to unit ...... Upload screen configuration, customized waypoints, routes, groups, etc to unit..... Done.....

I am actually surprised my 998c doesn't have a USB port under the waterproof door along with the card slots..... Why am I transferring waypoint and other GPS information to it using the SD card instead of my netbook?

After all I have been managing that sort of stuff on a computer, then moving it back and forth with my Garmin and Lawrence GPS units for years...... Was doing it with Windoze 95.

For the "it can't be done !" people out there that are saying it's a Proprietary language you may want to read your owners manual. This came out of mine:
