Just purchased a 798ci SI and when making appointment for install I was told that the transducer will not give any readout images at cruising speed. If I wanted any kind of image at cruise I would need to install another thru hull transducer and Y cable. Planning on transom mount but may change to trolling motor.
I don't expect SI at cruise but would like something, at least what I got with the 400tx units.
Does anyone have experence with this issue ?

Depending on your boat and where the transducer is installed it may or may not be able to give sonar readings at cruising speed. What many are doing is installing the side imaging transducers up higher on the transom to protect them from damage and installing a second transducer inside-the-hull (the XP-9-20 is for fiberglass boats only) and using an AS-Si-DB-Y cable to connect them both to their Si units. This will give you good 2D sonar readings at higher boat speeds while allowing you to have the Si/Di sonar at slow boat speeds.
If you mount the unit on the bow with the Si transducer on the trolling motor this is all a moot point as you will only be able to get sonar readings with the trolling motor in the water.

One more thing, if I place the 798 at the bow should I upgrade the ducer ? I have read that there is improved image quality and additional copper coating with the XHS-9-HDSi-180-T should I trade the original for this upgrade ?

The XHS-9-HDSi-180-T transducer will improve the image quality when used with the 798c Si units but not everyone can see that difference on the smaller display of the 798 units. I would consider doing this if the exchange price difference isn’t too bad. Otherwise I would go with the XTM-9-Si-180-T transducer to save money as it has added noise shielding and made to fit on the trolling motor. The XHS-9-HDSi-180-T will need to use an adapter (the XTM-9-HDSi-180-T is the same transducer but uses the Humminbird trolling motor adapter) which can leave it less protected.
