How can you merge tracks?
« on: June 23, 2013, 10:29:12 PM »
I have about 30-40 tracks on my HB 1197 and 997 consisting of roadbeds, creeks, and boatlanes.

50 tracks is the HB maximum.  My colors are roadbed(black), creeks(blue) and boatlanes(red).
I am approaching the maximum number of tracks.

I have limited success merging some tracks.  The problem is that the merging will also connect the track end-points which results in a false trail.  Sometime the false trail is not display, but sometimes it is(depends on the distance between the points and the map zoom level).

Any ideas?

Hi,
There is a way to get single tracks displayed as multiple, unconnected sections. Humminbird does it when, for example, you start your unit a long distance away from the last place you stopped it. You'll notice that the current track does not join the end of the existing points.

We use the same technique in our product to show "contours", and provide track merging features of the sort you describe.
See here for a step-by-step on how this works. With merging and (optionally) simplification of the track paths (to reduce the track point count), you can get a huge number of trails into each track slot. This also gives the advantage of having far fewer tracks to edit when changing the appearance in the HB unit.

So yes - I am plugging ReefMaster :) - but, no need to buy - you should be able to get it done within the free trial period.

I had to add track-points on some of my roadbed tracks because I discovered that HB units would not display the track when zooming in on the navigation screen.  So I normally placed track-points 200-300 ft apart maximum so I can zoom in to 50-200ft displays.  So I wonder if HB actually breaks their tracks as you mention above or that the two end-point track-points are a far-distance so as to just not display?  But you are probably correct that HB does indeed break the tracks cause I do notice after running end-to-end on a lake, then performing a Clear Track, that after running back to the other end that the previous track history still exists.  That would explain it.

I will look into Reefmaster.
