Title: ALL SI Models - add a selection to turn off the 83/200
Post by: sonar2000 on April 13, 2012, 03:33:06 PM
Model:
ALL SI Models
Suggested Upgrade:
add a selection to turn off the 83/200
Explanation:
Add a selection on the 83/200 menu to turn  off both transmitters.
There are times we might want to run only side image.
It may also save some processing time when it is not needed. Also open up some cpu availability.
And possibly eliminate some recording gaps.

I was remiss in that bottom depth is determined by the 83/200.

So that might invalidate the wish...Lets see what HB says about this....

Great idea Chuck also I will use my second unit at times just for it's chart. And the transducer would have no need to be on on the TM when I'm power trolling the flats with the outboard.

I think the unit uses the 200Khz to adjust the ping rate.

good point Gattlin..

Bob B...Rickard replied to the wish list about the 200 transducer.

He addressed the ping setting or the need to do that..
We will adjust the wish list as necessary.
Thanks for the input.

We may get these HB's to work as we want yet..

The thing with the 200 kHz signal transmitting all the time, is that without Ethernet, you can't put 2 sonar on the same boat.

I had to go with Garmin which can shoot a 77 kHz signal only, to pair it with any Humminbird Units.
It's a shame that I have to sell a 778C to replace it with a low-end Garmin since it won't work with the new 798ci SI HD.

If we can disable the 200 kHz beam, I could put the 778c on 83 kHz only at the front of the boat and use the 798 in scanning mode at the helm...

HB needs to listen to what we need and not what they think we need. :P

I agree with you completely...

If every company can stop the 200 kHz, why HB can't?

You can derive the depth data with any signal!

Xsil....WHY is a good question completely.

I think several of us would like to know WHY.

Watch out for what you wish for guys.
If Humminbird does succeed in turning off the 200khz,
then that change will be in a new software update.
That new update will most likely mess up something else. :)

So the SI needs the 200 signal to detect the depth and adjust the ping speed for SI? Iīm thinking of buying a Humminbird with SI but want my Lowrance as a 2D sonar that uses 200 khz. Is it possible to use the 83 signal instead on the Humminbird to detect the depth and turn the 200 khz off?

Is this the same with all Humminbirds SI units?

I don't think you can turn off the 200 khz.
I think all the units use that frequency to obtain
the water depth.

So, if you use the Humminbird with the Lowrance, you will
probably get some interference.
You may be able to mask some of it with the noise filter.
It also depends on how far apart the transducers are.

Man that sucks. What happens if you break the 200 signals cutting the wire?

Well, it is not recommended that you cut the wire(s).
I would assume the water depth would not work.
It would probably cause problems with DI and SI too.
Not sure.

Greg would know.

Not seeing water Depth on SI it's not a problem , I have the 2d sonar showing Depth.

Please fill in Greg.

I read that it's possible using a lss2 with a bird. Is this a solution?

I don’t know what disabling the 200kHz would do to the Si but would not ancourage it.  As stated before; the data from the 200kHz signal is used with the Si sonar.

Too bad because I like lowrance 2d sonar but would prefer bird for SI

It is my understanding that the depth is taken from the 200 k transducer straight down and that the SI depths are calculated using slant range calcs. If this is right then we have to have both the 200 and 455/800 on. 2D is also taken from the 200k.
Since the cone of 200 is not very wide at the top you probably could get by with using 2 different 200 transducers/units.
We use HB for SI and the boat operator/driver uses the lowrance 2d for depth and the lowrance maps for tracks and waypoints...... The transducers are probably 10 feet apart..
Have not seen any interference..

Maybe it will work but  spending $1500 and get  interference is not fun....

I use a Garmin Echo 200 which fire the 200 and 77 kHz signal.
You can set it to only shoot the 77 kHz signal. I thought that would be great with my 798 which ping the 200/83 signal, but I have interference between them. It's ok down to 50 ft, after that both become ugly real fast.

Lowrance used to be miles ahead of Humminbird as far as their
2-D sonar, but not anymore.

Humminbird 2-D is as good as it gets, and I think it's
awesome.

If you do get sonar-to-sonar interference on your Humminbird unit, you can try turning on and up the Noise Filter menu to combat this.  May not work all of the time but does most of the time from what responses I have read.

I run my Lowrance using the USB2 transducer simultaneously with my 1198c SI & have no interference at all.

Scott: Are you using 200 khz on the Lowrance? Do you have long distance between the transducer? Maybe the noise filter will help.

Sounds good. You donīt get any interference when you go in deeper water like 100 ft?
