Title: Tranducer cable repair
Post by: 49thdiver on October 03, 2011, 01:24:53 PM
I am just in the midst of trying to repair the broken cable going into the transducer.
I am creating a short video of pictures and cutting, will post soon.
I thought I would share this diagram as an independent piece, I though it might be use(http://)ful to others.

Updated Oct 4 with cable detail, thanks to sonar 2000, Greg and others

Hangon.  I have the function of these wire pairs..

This great info.  I found that Cat 6a is better than regular cat 6.  Havent built a cable yet, been busy, but I post pics when doing it.   Anyone have a problem with factory plug ends on factory cables cross talking?  Just wondering.

The standrad HB plug are junk! Roddy

Anyone try running just the two pair for the side scan transducers and not the down / temp?  If that were possible, then you could run two transducers off one Cat6 cable.

Roddy, that is what I was thinking.  If the pairs needed to be shielded, the plugs arent, or dont appear to be.  Doesnt do it any good to have too many plugs along the line.  I think I will just do a solid 1 piece cable for the towfish.  I was thinking of doing it like yours, but I dont want any problems, like  crosstalk, or a low voltage or higher resistance all because of a plug.  It always seems like its a connection in any electrical problem on a boat, even if it is inside, or well taped out of the weather, connections give problems, even plugs, often plugs.   I was thinking of having a transom mount and the towfish with a Y, but now I think I will do it with 2 dedicated cables, and just unscrew the holder and switch like that.  Maybe I will use the TS3 switch.      Bigkahuna, I read the post that some one from Sweden was putting 2 transducers together to get a longer array, but what would 2 transducers do, and would the machine be able to read it?  Not from the plug obviously, since it is temp and down.  Maybe on the down side, who knows.  Yes, you could just run without the down and temp.

I have tested with omitting the down 200 kHz channel and the result is terrible. Ping rate in the SI channels is controlled by depth info from the down channel so when that info is lost ping rate goes down to the lowest possible - something around one ping per second. The unit reacts as if depth is extreme. Depending on depth, ping rate use to be somewhere between 10 - 20 pings per second. One ping gives one horizontal line in the image.
Stevemc, I (the guy from Sweden  :) ) have joined two transducers to get narrower main beam. This is favorable when searching for wrecks at long range. Transducer physics tell the longer the transducer, the narrower the beam. The units have no problems reading the signals from extended transducers. The envelope for transducer design seems to be quite wide. However, to benefit from the enhanced resolution you must view the recordings on a computer, the unit displays have too low pixel resolution and can't show all details.

Rickard, I read your post on the 2 transducers that you put together, very good reading.  I am amazed you were able to get it to work, it is all solid sealed.  I just didnt understand how Bigkahuna would work 2 transducers in 1 cable, since they dont really work that way.  There are a lot of very skilled people here, and I am trying to absorb it all.  Keep up all the high tech work!
