787c2i - water temperature reading faulty
« on: May 22, 2014, 08:11:18 AM »
Unit; 787c2i, latest software update, new TS-W speed/temp sensor

Last summer I was having an issue with the water temp reading.  It would work ok for a while then it would read 118 degrees, or 176 degrees, or whatever. Never a consistant number.  I could turn the unit off, then back on and it would read the correct water temp.  After searching through posts here I found a few with similar issues and it was determined that a replacement speed/temp sensor was needed.  I purchased the correct sensor for my unit from Humminbird, a TS-W, and installed it last night.  Running a diagnostic it senses the speed and temp are connected, but I am still not getting the correct water temp reading as it shows 156 degrees.  Cycling power does not change anything.  I will restet all defaults tonight as I didn't think about it yesterday but what else can I do?  I just had this unit sent in for another issue last spring and I really don't want to drop another $100+ for shipping unless there are no other alternatives. What are the odds I got a bad speed/temp sensor?  I REALLY NEED the temp reading to work properly.

Anyone around the Selfridge Air Base in Michigan on Lake St. Clair have a unit that we could test on my boat or I could test mine on yours?

Snowman do you have the unit displaying the temperature or auxiliary temperature.  I think on that unit when you connect a TS-W to it the readout will show as the Aux. Temp.

I wasn't aware there was "temp" or "aux temp" settings. If that is all it is, would that have been set back to a default type setting when I initially started to have this issue? Maybe I restored factory settings and don't remember.  Keep in mind a power cycle would get me the correct reading.  I don't think I have ever changed it. I will run through the manual and check it out and report back.

So the replacement TS-W was replacing another TS-W and not the temperature sensor in the transducer, right?

Check the sockets for the transducer and TS-W for any that are damaged or appear differently than the rest.

Correct.  I have the combined speed/temp sensor.  Didn't get a chance to check settings yesterday but I will this afternoon.

I can not find anything that would change a setting from "temp" to/from "aux temp".   The only thing I can find is "temp offset" and "aux temp offset".  Reset to factory defaults and no change.  Today the temp reading was 175.6 degrees.  During a diagnostic today, the speed is conected and the temp is connected.  I still have the manual and can only find the offsets as well.  Can you find it in the manual HB_Greg?  I will look again also.  Still bummed out...

OK. I went through all the different functions on my unit under normal and advanced user modes, and I read through the entire manual and I can not find anything that will allow me to change between "temp" and "aux temp".  I THINK based on the manual that it should be set to read the aux temp as that is what the TS-W is; the temp/speed sensor combo and NOT the temp/transducer.  I would have thought that the system would automatically sense the difference but maybe not.  Any ideas? I really need this to work ...

The unit only displays settings and menus for accessories that are "connected"...

Can you look under the "Accessories View" and see if the aux temp probe is shown as "connected"...??

It's listed in the available views under the "Views" tab in the main menu system...

(You may have to make the Accessories View "Visable" to see it in the Rolodex cycle of views...)

I believe that the auxiliary temp readout was added after the manuals went to print for the 787c2i units snowman.  Try looking under the Select Readouts (under the Setup menus) and change of them to the auxiliary temperature.  If you are seeing the Aux Temp Offset or Aux Temp Alarm menus the unit has detected the auxiliary temperature sensor.

OK guys I figured out PART of it...you guys are awsome!  TEMP and AUX TEMP are connected;

Found the area under "SELECT READOUTS" to display both and I set it;

I can get the AUX TEMP to display correctly now!  This also shows the TEMP reading;

Here is the problem.  On the "BIG DIGITS" display and on the GPS/CHART it shows the TEMP reading!

How do I change the reading on those 2 screens to show AUX TEMP instead of TEMP?

Some of the readout boxes on the chart views are hard coded and will not change..(even tho you can select a different item for that box in the menu system)...

I'm not sure which of the readout boxes this is in your specific unit...

Try changing one of the other readout boxes to your temp and see if it will change...

I believe that the only View that you can change the readouts on for those two units is the full 2D sonar View.  The readouts for the other Views is hardcoded and cannot be operator changed.

I think you guys are correct.  I am positive however, that pre- sotware update it diplayed the info I wanted.  I don't even know where the temp reading of 150+ degrees comes from. More importantly, why it is being displayed at all.  I only have 1 temp sensor, the TS-W, so why display 2 readings?  Oh well at this point I can get an accurate water temp so I guess its good enough.  I'm sure the software update changed things, and not for the better.  Maybe I can go back to the previous version?

snowman,
The temperature reading is coming from the (malfunctioning) temperature sensor that is built into the transducer.

You can go back to the previous version of software but be forewarned that you should never install a software version older than what the unit was built with.

Ok I guess that makes sense.  The transducer has a built in temp sensor.  The combo temp/speed sensor also has a temp sensor, obviously.  So on some screens it is displaying the transducer/temp reading as "TEMP"  and on other screens it is displaying the speed/temp reading as "AUX TEMP" and on at least 2 other screens both are displayed.

I am already on 'ducer #3 due to faulty temp readings and I really don't want to replace it again as the 700 series units are no longer available.  I guess next time I will upgrade to a 900 or 1100 or a different brand.  Thanks for all the help guys.
