GPS Unit Nor Responding
« on: January 05, 2010, 09:58:25 AM »
So I went out and practiced with my unit.  After about 30 mins I got my settings to the point where I could graph good side images.  As I was navigating across the lake I got a message saying that the GPS was not connected (something to that extent).  I waited a min and then powered the unit down and restarted it.  It worked fine.  Shortly after it did it again.  Restart and worked fine.  When I got home I retraced my track and noted another instance where it stop responding and started back on it's own. That must have happened when I was focusing on the birds in the distance feeding on shad.  I called BPS and explained the situation and they said that was common no need to worry.  Wanted to know if this is the case and/or if anyone else ever had this problem in the past.  The conditions were heavy overcast.  I did note that it happened when I was running full speed (25 MPH ;D).  I checked all my connections and it worked fine.  Also, when I am practicing with the simulator in my garage the unit locks in on a position quickly and has not lost it one time.

Thanks in advance.

I'm sure someone with more expertise than me I have will come along but I'll give my guesses.  As far as losing the GPS it may be a loose or bad connection.  However, I have a Lowrance that came with my boat that will work for a while but when it seems that when it warms up it quits and doesn't work again until it has been turned off long enough to cool.  I would check connections at the back of the unit.  I really don't see it losing the signal as "normal" but I've only actually used mine twice so I'm a newbie.  One of the Humminbird folks will be along.

I do believe that on the simulation mode that the unit is not actually using the GPS antenna but rather is "simulating" what it would be doing if it were using it.  I use mine inside my metal barn on simulation mode and I seriously doubt it could pick up a signal there.

That's what I guess as well Whitedog.

Icookie, check if the GPS plug is placed correctly in the cable collector plug. Maybe it can move there.
My two cents.

Regards and good luck / Harry

Next time out you need to connect your cables directly into the unit, not using the plug that the cables connect to. If the unit works without trouble then your problem is a loose connector. When you reassemble the plug, check the metal keeper to insure that the cable is all the way into the plug. If the unit still has the problem, then try to locate another user and test your unit in their boat.

More than likley you have a loose connection.

Thanks guys.  I will take it out this weekend and plug in each connector separately to see what happens.  Will keep you posted.

That happines to me quite a bit. I have to loosen the screw that holds the connector wires to the unit... jiggle it a bit ( the plastic piece that holds the wires) and retighten the screw real good to the unit. Works for me every time..

I had a problem with my transducer plug coming out of the mount every time I took the unit out after a days fishing. Solved it with a tiny drop of superglue ;D

Did not get out on the lake as we had a snow storm in my area.  I will keep you posted on my progress when I have a chance to get back out.

I have heard of some issues with pins on the connectors, but have not verified it.  I did have an issue with my GRHA going out on my 997, but have not been on the water enough lately to see if it has recurred.  I did try bending the pins outward so they fit tightly (BE CAREFULL NOT TO BREAK THEM).  It seemed to help at the time!
