BAD DEPTH READINGS
« on: March 06, 2011, 10:14:04 AM »
I have a KeyWest 1720 CC with a 798ci using v5_210 and with the unit set for 40 foot of water.  The transducer is on the starboard side.  At random instances the unit will give a false depth reading of 39 ft while actually in 3 ft of water.   Have shut the unit down and on restart it shows the same thing.  After some period of time, the depth readings return to normal only to once again go to the 38 - 39 foot range.  While in this condition, the SI screen is totally blank - as if no signal is being received.  When it feels like it, it begins to give the correct reading and the SI begins working.  When the unit is working correctly depth readings are good even at speeds to 35 mph.  Have connected another transducer to the unit on the same boat with exactly the same results.   Rather frustrating!!

The unit was into Humminbird’s repair facility in Jan 2011 to get a bad toggle switch fixed and at that time the unit was supposedly checked out completely.

Actual water depth is 3 ft.

1. Update the software (your profile is showing version 4.780).
2. Try a different Water Type menu setting to see if it helps.  Even though you are in shallow water you should try Deep Saltwater menu setting.

OK Greg, I am confused.  What does the deep salt water setting do when you are in shallow water?

This is a common issue especially in shallow water.  If you go over some mud or soft sand , which is what it looks like from your images, the unit may lose bottom or actually shoot thru the mud and return a deeper echo.

Try what Greg said and see if it helps.

Good Luck,
