Need a little 1198 advice.
« on: March 08, 2014, 05:08:42 PM »
Long time reader, first time I had the need to ask for help. Actually rnvinc has helped me a lot when I needed it!
I have a 1198 running 6.74 which is the latest update. Had the unit about 2 years.
Been having trouble with the unit locking up when marking a way point, it will just freeze, wait 10 minutes nothing, try the power button, nada.  Restart unit and the first waypoint you mark it locks up.
I removed all waypoints, cleared tracks, formatted nav directory, and restored defaults.
Ran it fresh like this with no waypoints added.  After marking 4 waypoints it started saying waypoint saved but didn't assign it a name and it didn't show up on the map.  I restarted the unit and the same thing.

Any ideas what to try?  I do have the current software, not sure if I can reload it over the same version or not?

Appreciate any input you can give me.  I am probably overlooking something, but for the life of me can't think of what to try next.

have you tried a different card?   make sure that the switch on the side of the card didn't slip to the wrong position.

I had completely removed the card so that it wouldn't try to load the waypoints from it.

ie I won't get the screenshot, but it will write the coordinate to internal memory, I think?!

Do you have snapshot turned on the the settings?

When you mark a waypoint without the snapshot feature turned on, it just saves the waypoint to the unit internal memory......If you have snapshot turned on, it must write the snapshot to the card, not the unit memory.
If you don't have a writeable card inserted, the unit is going to get confused trying to write the snapshot.

Try resetting defaults if you don't have snapshot turned on.

Bob when I restored defaults, the default is for image snapshot to be off.  I checked and it is off.  So it is not trying to write to the card.

Ignore my post on the other thread.

Have to call customer service or wait for Greg to check in.....that is usually what causes it.

Are you absolutely certain you don't have a power issue....that can cause some strange issues.

99.99% sure it isn't a power issue, Battery is about 4 months old group 27, tests good.  I fish every weekend, have a 958 and the 1198 networked.  Both using the same battery. 958 has no issues, the 1198 issues just cropped up last weekend.

Thanks for the help!

Could be a connection problem.  The HB power connector sometimes needs to have the pins tweaked just slightly....or could be a fuse connection, etc.

Redge, sounds like you checked all the easy stuff. I would upload the previous software back onto the unit and see if that solves it. I have had some weird stuff happen after updates.

Did you by chance export and reload waypoints prior to clearing the waypoints, tracks and reformatting?

Ez, I had actually exported the waypoints, looked at them in HBPC, saw one that had no E coodrinates, deleted it and then put the coords back on a card and uploaded them.

Reason I asked is I've read somewhere in the past that others have had similar problems with possible corruption issues when reloading.  If so, they had to send their units back to HB for a reset.  I haven't personally had this problem with my unit but perhaps someone will chime in and provide some guidance.  I would recommend calling HB Customer service...they may be able to assist over the phone.

You said you have had your unit for 2 years.
Did you just start noticing the problem after updating the
software?
If so, you might want to go back to the previous version and test it.
If you put the previous version on a card, and insert it in your running
unit, it should ask you if you want to update with that version.

I'd reset all settings to default before and after the update.

As many of us have discovered:
The newest software is not always the newest error free software.

Good Luck.

ITGeek, I had not upgraded software, I have been running the latest version since it came out, well at least since I saw no one posting that it killed there machine!  I still think the older software had a better image, but it is what it is.  It has been running stable for months.  I think it may be the card.  Will know after a new card and more testing this weekend.  Thanks for the reply!

Redge:
Have you added or replaced any electrical devices on your
boat just prior to noticing this problem?

If so, I would double check all electrical connections, and charge up and
load test your battery.  It doesn't matter if your battery is fairly new.
The only way to know for sure if it will sustain a load without dropping the required unit voltage is to load test it.
If you can't do it yourself, then take it to Advance Auto or Autozone, and they can test it for you.

Even if you haven't done anything to your boat, testing your battery will eliminate the most obvious culprit, and you can look further.

ITGEEK haven't added or replaced any device, actually I replaced the transducer on my 958 does that count?  Will run the load test if the card doesn't fix it this weekend.

I have been contemplating a completely separate battery for my FF's, does anyone have an idea how big  a battery that I would need to run a 1198 and a 958 for at least 2 days (don't want to come close to not having enough battery to fish all day)?  If anyone has done this, or can point me to a thread about a completely separate battery let me know.

If this appears to hijack my own thread, mods please feel free to delete this part or do whatever you need to do.
